This program is the launch of The Space of Effusion: Sam Francis in Japan, a book that provides new research about California-born painter Sam Francis’s evolving relationship with East Asian aesthetics. Author Richard Speer speaks with artist Shingo Francis, Director of the Sam Francis Foundation Debra Burchett-Lere, and LACMA curators Leslie Jones and Hollis Goodall.
In this conversation, Shingo Francis, son of Sam Francis and filmmaker Mako Idemitsu, shares his perspective on growing up dually in Japan and the U.S. as his parents lived and worked in both countries, integrating Eastern and Western traditions. Shingo and his father often painted together, affording Shingo a rare glimpse into the ways in which the elder Francis was influenced by Japanese art and ideas.
Speer, Jones, and Goodall are co-curators of LACMA’s upcoming exhibition San Francis and Japan: Emptiness Overflowing. The exhibition explores the common ground linking Francis’s abstract paintings, prints, and sculpture with the traditions of historical Japanese art, as well the mutual influence among Francis and his friends and contemporaries in Japan from the late 1950s through the early 1990s.

American painter and printmaker, Sam Francis, born in 1923 in San Mateo, CA, is renowned for his California Abstract Expressionist work. His career as an artist started following an accident leading to spinal tuberculosis while serving in the US Army Air Corps. He started to paint for distraction in 1944, studying privately under David Park in 1947. He subsequently relinquished his earlier medical and psychology studies in favor of painting, completing his BA (1949) and MA (1950) at the University of California at Berkeley. During this period he experimented with different styles of painting, notably Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.
In particular, Sam Francis was Influenced by the Abstract Expressionist works of Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Clyfford Still. He soon emerged with his own unique styles of painting in the late 1940s. During the late 1950s, Sam Francis travelled to Japan and his later works seem to be influenced by Oriental art with thin paint texture and large void spaces. The saturated fields of color reveal the influence of the contemplative quality of Japanese art. The increasing simplicity of his latter works resembled Minimal Art.
Primarily interested in transforming different sensations of light onto canvas, Sam Francis was drawn by the light of California, where he lived and worked, as well as Monet's Waterlilies series. Dripping, corpuscular shapes painted in fluid are typical elements, which circulate freely around his canvas, indicating what was to become a perennial concern with 'ceaseless instability.' With his sensitivity to sensuous color and light, Sam Francis showed very different concerns from the expressive iconography and energy of many of the Abstract Expressionists.
Despite the apparent spontaneity of his compositions, Sam Francis was highly methodical and rigorous. In his later work he pushed out the abstract forms to the edges of the composition, leaving large empty spaces, again in accordance with the Oriental notion of negative space.
Although, he is more renowned for his paintings, Sam Francis was also an accomplished printmaker and sculptor. The work of Sam Francis is held in the permanent collection of every encyclopedic modern art museum in the world. Sam Francis's works have been exhibited internationally for over fifty years. He is represented in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan.
On November 4, 1994 Sam Francis passed away in Santa Monica, California.

The Circle of Sam Francis:
Experimenting in California
Bakersfield Museum of Art
May 25, - September 9, 2023
Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis kept several studios and homes throughout California from the 1960s through the 1990s. When he arrived in Santa Monica, Francis was the most notable painter in the area, laser-focused on building a burgeoning art community. He surrounded himself with many studio assistants over the years who were young artists themselves, recent graduates, or from other workshops.
The artists who worked closely with him viewed their time in the studios as an opportunity for education and experimentation. It was a chance for assistants to nurture their own developing interests as well as supporting the artist, allowing for a mutual relationship of influence. Francis provided his own creative vision and talents, and an atmosphere in which to learn and grow. In turn, the assistants provided inspiration, creativity, and energy to enable Francis to fulfill his vision. The Circle of Sam Francis invites viewers into the rich collaborative studio life that Francis fostered during his time in California and how this period fed into the creative paths of the many young artists who assisted Francis.
EXHIBITING ARTISTS
Jerry Aistrup, Edith Baumann, Kurt Blum, Krauth Brand, Daniel Cytron, Susan Einstein, Sam Francis, Irving “Doc” Groupp, Dan Gualdoni, Shane Guffogg, John Haines, Lucius Hudson, Bryan Ida, Mitchell Johnson, Stefan Kirkeby, Keith Kirts, Gregory Mahoney, Judith Margolis, Nancy Mozur, Michael Murray, Meibao Nee, Ann Page, George Page, Jeff Perkins, Jaime Robles, Ed Ruscha, Jacob Samuels, Susan Titelman, Mark Whitney, Tiana Williams, Keiko Yoshimura
