The NEW Tommy Dorsey Orchestra w/Sam Donahue Live album 1963
As a “Big Band” purist, I have always had strong feelings about “Ghost Bands”.
In case you don’t know, a “Ghost Band” is a Big Band that has continued to exist and perform after the death of it’s leader. They are led by new leaders.
In my opinion, most “Ghost Bands” lack the drive and excitement of the band under the replacement leaders. I make no apology for saying this, because I have heard them all.
(To be fair, the average listener can’t tell the difference. However I have been listening to Big Bands since I was a child, and have played in them since 1971)
I recently purchased a cd by a famous “Ghost Band” under a leader that continues to lead that band. The cd seems to me to be going through the motions. They play all the correct notes, but the music is executed listlessly.

I recently purchased a cd by a famous “Ghost Band” under a leader that continues to lead that band. The cd seems to me to be going through the motions. They play all the correct notes, but the music is executed listlessly.
A wonderful exception was the “New” Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Sam Donahue.
This album, which was recorded in 1963, showcases a band that swings with fire, and excitement much like the Dorsey Band sounded when Tommy was living.
Sam Donahue was a fine musician who played saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. He joined the horn sections of the Dorsey Band to augment the section. Donahue’s tenor sax solos remind me of Ted Nash (the Les Brown Ted Nash) and Charlie Ventura.
This album features the great Helen Forrest singing. Also featured are Larry O’Brian on trombone, Jeannie Thomas and the Pied Pipers singing, and the great Charlie Shavers on trumpet.
Highlights for me are The Best Things in Life Are Free with Charlie Shavers in his prime. Body and Soul with a very modern sounding sax solo from Sam Donahue. Finishing with a wild Well Git It.
The drummer is Tommy Check, and he is a monster!)
