The Sai River(犀川,Sai-gawa) is a river in Japan which flows through Gifu Prefecture, and empties into the Nagara River.
Geography
The river flows from the city of Motosu, where it takes water from the Neo River and flows south. After running through Hozumi and Ōgaki, it runs parallel to the Nagara River, which it joins in Anpachi.
The cherry blossoms on the banks of the river near Sunomata Castle are well known and are included on a list of the top 33 cherry blossom sites in Gifu Prefecture.
History
1530: A large flood shifted the main branch of the original Neo River to its current route. This same flood created the Sai River.
1641: A fight broke out between the owners of the Mushiroda Canal (席田用水 Mushiroda Yōsui) and the Makuwa Canal (真桑用水 Makuwa Yōsui) over water usage from the Sai River. The dispute was settled with the Mushiroda Canal taking 60% of the flow and the Makuwa Canal taking the remaining 40%.
1929: The Sai River Incident occurred when residents demonstrated against the prefectural governor for plans to alter the flow of the river.
Sai River (Thai:แม่สาย or แม่น้ำสาย; rtgs:Mae Sai or Maenam Sai; Thai pronunciation:[mɛ̂ː.sǎːj / mɛ̂ː.náːm.sǎːj]), formerly known as the River of Lawa (Thai:แม่ละว้า; rtgs:Mae Lawa), is a river that forms the natural border between Thailand and Myanmar at Tachileik and Mae Sai Districts. Mae Sai town, where the bridge crossing the international border is located, is named after this river. It is a tributary of the Ruak River, itself a tributary of the Mekong.
Course
The river has its sources in the Daen Lao Range, in Shan State, Myanmar. Then it flows southeastwards, bending eastwards at the feet of the northern end of the Doi Nang Non ridge before flowing through the Tachileik/Mae Sai urban area, where there is a sign marking the northern most point of Thailand just east of the border-crossing bridge —at the meeting point of Thailand Route 1 and National Highway 4 (Burma)— over the river. Finally it flows northeastwards before joining the right side of the Ruak River, a tributary of the Mekong, less than 3 kilometres (2mi) southeast of Tachileik Airport.
A Saiō(斎王), also known as "Itsuki no Miko"(いつきのみこ), was an unmarried female relative of the Japanese emperor, sent to Ise to serve at Ise Grand Shrine from the late 7th century until the 14th century. The Saiō's residence, Saikū (斎宮), was approximately 10km north-west of the shrine. The remains of Saikū are situated in the town of Meiwa, Mie, Japan.
The Origins of the Saiō
According to Japanese legend, around 2,000 years ago the divine Yamatohime-no-mikoto, daughter of the Emperor Suinin, set out from Mt. Miwa in Nara Prefecture in search of a permanent location to worship the goddess Amaterasu-omikami. Her search lasted for 20 years and eventually brought her to Ise, Mie Prefecture, where the Ise Shrine now stands. Prior to Yamatohime-no-mikoto's journey, Amaterasu-omikami had been worshiped at the Imperial Palaces in Yamato.
According to the Man'yōshū (The Anthology of Ten Thousand Leaves), the first Saiō to serve at Ise was Princess Oku, daughter of Emperor Temmu, during the Asuka period of Japanese history. Mention of the Saiō is also made in the Aoi, Sakaki and Yugao chapters of The Tale of Genji, as well as in the 69th chapter of The Tales of Ise (Ise Monogatari).
Shai (also spelt Sai, occasionally Shay, and in Greek, Psais) was the deification of the concept of fate in Egyptian mythology. As a concept, with no particular reason for associating one gender over another, Shai was sometimes considered female, rather than the more usual understanding of being male, in which circumstance Shai was referred to as Shait (simply the feminine form of the name). His name reflects his function, as it means (that which is) ordained.
As the god of fate, it was said that he determined the span of each man's life, and was present at the judgement of the soul of the deceased in duat. In consequence, he was sometimes identified as the husband of Mesenet, goddess of birth, or, in later years, of Renenutet, who assigned the Ren, and had become considered goddess of fortune. Because of the power associated in the concept, Akhenaten, in introducing monotheism, said that Shai was an attribute of Aten, whereas Ramses II claimed to be lord of Shai (i.e. lord of fate).
Saï is a large island in the Nile River in Nubia between the second and third cataracts. It is 12km long and 5.5km wide. Saï was intermittently occupied by the Egyptians during the New Kingdom.
Liberman is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton, released on October 23, 2015, through Dine Alone Records. It is the follow up to Carlton's 2011 album Rabbits on the Run and marks her first release since signing with Dine Alone Records. The title of the album comes from an oil painting made by Carlton's late grandfather, whose given surname was Liberman.
Background and writing
Following the 2011 release Rabbits on the Run, Carlton took time off to get married, start a family and write another album. She tells CBS News that these changes in her life are reflected in Liberman's songs and that she "wanted the whole album to feel like an escape type of album, where you put it on and you feel like you're in this dreamy state."
To avoid preconceived notions, demos recorded were sent to Dine Alone Records without Carlton's name attached. Label president Joel Carriere recalls hearing the demos and tells The Toronto Star, "The songs were amazing, it was atmospheric, it kind of fit into what we’re all into ... and we never would have guessed it was Vanessa Carlton because her voice has developed so much since her pop songs 14 years ago and the songwriting had obviously changed. We were, like: 'Yeah, we want to do this. But what is it we’re doing?'"
