Sack of Rome by Visigoths led by King Alaric in 410
A short documentary about the Sack of Rome which occurred on 24 August 410, and was done by the Visigoths led by King Alaric. Although labelled as a barbarian, Alaric was a Christian who received his military training in the Roman army. At that time, Rome was no longer the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The empire was lead at the time of the sack by emperor Honorius, son of Emperor Theodosius who died in 395. The most capable Roman commander, Flavius Stilicho, had been executed in 408, and the Roman army lacked an authentic leader. Alaric asked the emperor Honorius for money, food, and a land where to settle with his people inside the Empire. The Roman emperor sent an insulting answer to Alaric, and tried to get rid of him, which infuriated the Visigothic king. On the night of August...

This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire. It deals with the division of the empire by Theodosius I and the rule of his successors Honorius and Arcadius. Honorius' reign saw Britannia leave the empire and the first sack of Rome in about 800 years. The borders of the empire continued to weaken under his successors in the west as the East held on in the face of barbarian groups like the Huns or the Vandals. In the end, ...

Fall of Rome (Visigoth Invasion)
With the rise of the Huns rampaging in the eastern europe, in 376 CE the Goths seek refuge in the Roman Empire, now divided between eastern & western empire.
Initially abused by the Romans, the Goths strive for their independence and rose to challenge both the eastern and western Roman empire in the game of friend and foe. Decaying western roman empire slowly give up to the Germanic newcomers who control its territories and ultimately its capital in 476 CE.

What did Rome look like immediately after it was sacked for the first time in 800 years? Our virtual reconstruction will help with it
On August 24, 410 CE, the Goths entered the City under the leadership of Alaric. The barbarians plundered Rome for several days, and then went to the south of Italy. The Eternal City of Rome was left to its sad fate...
We will make a virtual journey, a walk through the Roman Forum. We will see how the appearance of buildings has changed, and what destruction has been caused.
This is the first episode of a series dedicated to the history of the destruction of Rome. I want to make a series of videos that reflect the slow decline of the once great City over the centuries of the Dark Ages. We will see how temples, forums and theaters were gradually destroyed and rebuilt, and how, centuries later, a new, medieval Rome came to replace it.

In the end, the Western Roman Empire would disappear in 476 ushering in a new age of smaller kingdoms in Europe.
Recommended books:
Chris Wickham - The Inheritance of Rome. Phenomenal book which covers the decline of the Roman Empire in the west (and also the East) and details what happened in the aftermath of its fall.
Peter Brown - The World of Late Antiquity. One of the classics surrounding the period. Be aware that it is starting to show its age but frankly there aren't loads of great introductory overview materials like this for the period so it's still very valuable.
