Eyewitnesses and survivors speak publicly of the massacre for the first time, and there is new testimony about the role of Israeli forces under Sharon’s command. Noam Chomsky: Sabra & Shatila Massacre That Forced Sharon's Ouster Recalls Worst of Jewish Pogroms
http://www.democracynow.org - We look at one of the most shocking incidents in the career of the late former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon: the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Up to 2,000 Palestinians died on Sept. 16-17, 1982, when the Israeli military allowed a Christian militia to attack the camp. Then-Defense Minister Ariel Sharon was forced to resign after a special Israeli investigative panel declared him to be "personally responsible" for the massacre. We air a description of the killings by Ellen Siegel, a Jewish-American nurse who was working at Gaza Hospital at the Sabra camp at the time of the attacks, and speak with Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University, and Noam Chomsky, world-renowned political dissident, linguist, author and Institute...

Was the IDF Responsible for the Death of Palestinians?
After a horrific attack on an Israeli family by a Lebanese teenager working with the Palestine Liberation Front (a faction of the PLO) in 1979, Israel looked for an ally to help create a secure buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon.
However, working with the President-elect of Lebanon, Bashir Gemayel, proved to have deadly consequences. His paramilitary group, the Phalangists massacred between 800 and 2,000 people in two Palestinian refugee camps called Sabra and Shatila.
With the world in an uproar over the horrific news of this event, all fingers pointed blame towards Israel. Although the IDF entered Lebanon to stop the PLO’s terror, Israel accepted responsibility for the part they played in the dark story of Sabra and Shatila.

Previously unseen archive of the massacre shows Israeli forces besieging the camps. 18 years ago an official Israeli inquiry deemed Sharon unfit for government because of his actions in Lebanon. Today he wants to reassert Israel’s “deterrent power”. On Israel’s border with Lebanon the pro-Iranian Hezbollah party is deeply entrenched. Secretary general of Hezbollah, Sheikh Nasrallah, tells us that Israel’s withdrawal from south Lebanon has not put an end to their struggle. Where is Sharon’s leadership going and could Lebanon be the flash-point for a new Middle East war?
