So Percussion performs Reich's "Mallet Quartet"
Mallet Quartet (2009) is scored for two vibraphones and two five octave marimbas. I had never written for five octave marimbas extending down to cello C. On the one hand I was delighted to have the possibility of a low bass and on the other hand apprehensive since just slightly too hard a mallet that low can produce noise instead of pitch. Eventually, after a bit of experimentation, this was well worked out.
The piece is in three movements, fast, slow, fast. In the two outer fast movements the marimbas set the harmonic background which remains rather static compared to recent pieces of mine like Double Sextet (2007).
The marimbas interlock in canon, also a procedure I have used in many other works. The vibes present the melodic material first solo and then in canon. However, in the central slow movement the texture changes into a thinner more transparent one with very spare use of notes, particularly in the marimbas. I was originally concerned this movement might just be 'too thin', but I think it ends up being the most striking, and certainly the least expected, of the piece.
Mallet Quartet is about 15 minutes in duration. It was co-commissioned by the Amadinda Quartet in Budapest (on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary), by Nexus in Toronto, So Percussion in New York and Synergy Percussion in Australia. The world Premiere was given by the Amadinda Quartet in Bela Bartók National Concert Hall on December 6, 2009. The American Premiere was given by So Percussion at Stanford University Lively Arts in California on January 9, 2010.

------------
ABOUT THE PIECE:
"Springs" (2016)
Springs, for percussion quartet exercises the ability of percussion to work up kinetic energy through pattern repetition and to ‘ spring’ into action.
- Paul Lansky
------------
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
With innovative multi-genre original productions, sensational interpretations of modern works, and an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam,” (The New Yorker), Sō Percussion has redefined the scope and role of the modern percussion ensemble.
Their repertoire ranges from “classics” of the 20th century, by John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis, et al, to commissioning and advocating works by contemporary composers such as David Lang, Steve Mackey, and Paul Lansky, to distinctively modern collaborations with artists who work outside the classical concert hall, including electronic duo Matmos, the groundbreaking Dan Deacon, Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, choreographer Shen Wei, Bryce Dessner, and many others.
Sō Percussion also composes and performs their own works, ranging from standard concert pieces to immersive multi-genre programs – including Imaginary City, Where (we) Live, and their newest endeavor, A Gun Show, which will be performed throughout the current season, most notably in a multi-performance presentation as part of BAM’s 2016 Next Wave Festival.
Recent and upcoming highlights include an acclaimed Trilogy portrait at the 2016 Lincoln Center Festival; performances at Carnegie Hall with Shara Nova and Glenn Kotche, and for Steve Reich’s 80th birthday celebration; collaborations with Bryce Dessner at the Eaux Claires and Bonnaroo festival and elsewhere; touring dates throughout the United States; and much more.
Sō Percussion enthusiastically pursues a growing range of social and community outreach. Examples include their Brooklyn Bound presentations of younger composers; commitments to purchasing offsets to compensate for carbon-heavy activities such as touring travel; and leading their SōSI students in an annual food-packing drive, yielding up to 25,000 meals, for the Crisis Center of Mercer County through the organization EndHungerNE.
Sō Percussion is the Edward T. Cone Ensemble-in-Residence at Princeton University, where they offer educational work and present an annual series of concerts. They are also Co-Directors of the percussion department at the Bard College-Conservatory of Music, and run the annual Sō Percussion Summer Institute (SōSI), providing college-age composers and percussionists an immersive exposure to collaboration and project development.
Sō Percussion is Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting.

What’s this solitary game you play
What are you content to say
What’s your slot machine ballet
Have your fears refreshed today?
Feeding content to display
Has it always been this way?
Windy talkers advertise
Wearing suits bought with lies
Nothing comes as a surprise
They are lost but you are wise
Navigating what arises
Look into a stranger’s eyes
Trying kindness on for size
Tell me what you recognize
Every single day’s a chance
To see humanity advance
But bitter gods look down at ants
Scrolling through the avalanche
Of politics and quick romance
Navigating the expanse
Of rectangles and circumstance

SING ON
Music by Caroline Shaw, Eric Cha-Beach and Sō Percussion
Words by Caroline Shaw and Eric Cha-Beach, after Christina Rossetti
I don’t hear the wind
I don’t feel the rain
But I’ll sing on sing on until I find
The first verse and refrain
I won’t hear the thunder
I’m not here to entertain
Sing on sing on until you realize
I am not your weathervane
Sing on sing on
And find me in the evergreen
Sing on sing on
And know these shadows won’t be seen
Sing on sing on sing on
Sing on sing on
But sing no sad songs for me
Twilight doesn’t rise or set
You remember, I forget
Don’t plant your roses by my head
The grass will grow above my bed
Sing on sing on
And find me in the evergreen
Sing on sing on
And know these shadows won’t be seen
Sing on sing on sing on
Sing on sing on

SING ON
Music by Caroline Shaw, Eric Cha-Beach and Sō Percussion
Words by Caroline Shaw and Eric Cha-Beach, after Christina Rossetti
I don’t hear the wind
I don’t feel the rain
But I’ll sing on sing on until I find
The first verse and refrain
I won’t hear the thunder
I’m not here to entertain
Sing on sing on until you realize
I am not your weathervane
Sing on sing on
And find me in the evergreen
Sing on sing on
And know these shadows won’t be seen
Sing on sing on sing on
Sing on sing on
But sing no sad songs for me
Twilight doesn’t rise or set
You remember, I forget
Don’t plant your roses by my head
The grass will grow above my bed
Sing on sing on
And find me in the evergreen
Sing on sing on
And know these shadows won’t be seen
Sing on sing on sing on
Sing on sing on
But sing no sad songs for me
