RAF Fylingdales may not be one of the most well-known Royal Air Force stations but its role in keeping the UK safe is vital. It forms part of the UK and US governments’ Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. Military personnel watch for incoming missiles and also track space objects, operating as a kind of air traffic control for space. We were given the chance to look inside 👀.

Former Royal Air Force station serves a new purpose
Bicester Heritage is a novel concept: It's the UK's first heritage business park dedicated solely to historic motoring and aviation. Located at a former Royal Air Force station — the UK's leading remaining World War-period Bomber Command Station — the facility creates a cottage industry of specialists in order to promote the preservation and use of vintage aeroplanes and motorcars.

ABANDONED Royal Air Force Base
Join us as we explore an abandoned royal air force barracks in our home town, We first explored this place in 2001.
The site was first opened in 1918 by the Royal Air Force (RAF) under the name of RAF Eastburn, before closing in early 1920. However, in 1935 a new airfield was built for the RAF initially training bomber crews before closing in 1977 when the site was turned over to the British Army for use as a driving school being renamed Alamein Barracks.
On Thursday, 15 August 1940 there was a German air raid on the airfield. At approximately midday, some 50 Junkers Ju 88 bomber aircraft attacked the aerodrome, killing 13 military personnel and 1 civilian, and destroying 12 Whitley aircraft. The 169 bombs dropped caused extensive damage, with many buildings, including all five hangars, ...

RAF Police Land Rover with an L-plate. It's driving down a road apparently on an air force base, which is lined with trees. If you can't drive when you join the RAF police then you are taught how to. The Land Rover turns right - the driver both indicates and gives a hand signal. He stops, then reverses, turns and drives off. The importance of security. A form on a clipboard being ticked off. The driver of the Land Rover, in RAF police uniform, is being assessed by a uniformed man with a moustache. They are both in the Land Rover. The driver has passed his test.
Four RAF policemen standing by a Land Rover. They each have a radio - communications instruction. RAF trainee policemen in combat gear firing (Stirling ?)submachine guns at targets. In a gym, the trainee policemen practise unarmed combat - judo ? One throws another to the floor and is then shown a new move by the instructor. Behind him, other people vault over a wooden horse. A man in camouflage clothing opens a gate. Dog training. An Alsatian leaps up to greet him. On parade, the RAF trainee policemen stand to attention as their commanding officer steps onto a podium. It is their passing-out parade. They march past their commanding officer. He salutes them. An aircraft landing - a Viscount ?
An RAF police mini. It stops beside an RAF aircraft - it may be a Hercules. Aircraft are vulnerable on the ground. A policeman gets out of the mini and inspects the aircraft, checking for suspect devices. A policeman in the patrol car in radio contact with his base. The patrol car checks on a network of pipes. Two policemen get into a transport aircraft at RAF Brize Norton. They check the aircraft internally, looking for bombs. Anti-terrorist procedures. Checking passengers and their baggage at an airport. A child runs out of an airport building but is retrieved by an RAF policeman, who carries the child back into the airport building.
An RAF policeman with a dog who jumps through a number of squares of fire. Another RAF policeman gets his dog to do the same thing.
Advanced police work. An RAF policeman on patrol with a dog in a warehouse ? finds some drugs. This is a routine patrol at RAF Hildenrath, in Germany. An RAF police photographer takes pictures of the scene for evidence. Another policeman dusts for fingerprints. The RAF police set a trap for the culprits. A Land rover drops off a couple of RAF policemen at the warehouse then drives off. They split up and conceal themselves. The man comes to pick up the drugs. He takes a padlock off the door to the warehouse, opens it and enters. As he approaches the place where the drugs were found, the two RAF policemen arrest him. A barrier with a stop sign on it. A checkpoint at the entrance to an RAF base - Hildenrath. Three RAF policemen search a car entering the base. The interrogation of the arrested man. His answers are noted down. He denies everything and is cautioned. An RAF aircraft landing.
