Mark Rothko, born in 1903 in Daugavpils, Latvia, and passed away in 1970 in New York City, the United States of America, is one of the most celebrated artists of his generation, pioneering Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting. His works are marked by a radical approach towards the formal elements of painting – think of color, shape, composition, and scale – producing mesmerizing tableaus, most often large in scale, composing vertically aligned rectangular forms of large planes of color. Rothko layers these shapes, creating horizontal bands in which the adjacent colors tremble, vibrate, and even seem to emanat...

How to Look at a Mark Rothko Painting
What do Rothko’s paintings mean? Where did they come from? Mark Rothko wanted to make art that could stir the most basic human emotions. He spent his entire career exploring the primal language of abstract painting in pursuit of a spiritual, near-religious experience. He accomplished what few artists have ever done, he made something the world has never seen before.
Rothko believed art was a sacred space to communicate big ideas. He created a huge body of color field paintings that have become some of the most beloved works of the abstract expressionist movement.

ART/ARCHITECTURE - Mark Rothko
The most unexpectedly uplifting and consoling artist of the 20th century was the abstract painter Mark Rothko, the high priest of grief and loss who spent the latter part of his career turning out a succession of sublime and sombre canvases that spoke, as he put it, of the ‘tragedy of being human’.

The Painting that Changed Mark Rothko’s Career
In this episode of expert voices, David Galperin examines the painting that entirely shifted the remaining decade of Mark Rothko’s career. In 1958, Rothko’s transforms his color palette into the somber, meditative colors intended to provoke a submersive, awe-inspiring event upon viewing. Learn how in Untitled (Black on Maroon), Rothko embarks on this endeavor for the very first time. Untitled (Black on Maroon) is a highlight of the Contemporary Art Evening auction (28 October 2020, New York).

Rectangles after rectangles after rectangles. Rothko was a truly prolific artist who found his groove painting hazy swatches of color and stuck with it until the very end. Maybe you've wondered what the point of it all is, or why he did seemingly the same thing over and over again.

Christopher Rothko - Mark Rothko and the inner World
His works are marked by a radical approach towards the formal elements of painting – think of color, shape, composition, and scale – producing mesmerizing tableaus, most often large in scale, composing vertically aligned rectangular forms of large planes of color. Rothko layers these shapes, creating horizontal bands in which the adjacent colors tremble, vibrate, and even seem to emanate light. These radical abstract works seem to be imbued by the presence of a high philosophical truth. A spiritual character resides beneath the brushstrokes. Rothko succeeds in having a direct emotional impact with the beholder, in a similar way as music. His works are also linked to tragedy, ecstasy, and the sublime. Rothko believed strongly an abstract painting can directly represent the fundamental nature of human drama. In fact, he struggled with his own human drama, as a troubled figure with tormented thoughts, suffering off melancholia, before committing suicide in 1970 in New York City. This is the story of: Mark Rothko.

On the 25th February 1970, the Tate gallery in London received nine Mark Rothko canvasses, a generous donation from the artist himself.
A few hours later, Rothko was found dead in his studio on East 69th Street in Manhattan. The 66-year-old painter had taken his own life.
His suicide would change everything and shape the way we respond to his work.
Rothko was aware that people often burst into tears when confronted with his painting. “I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions, tragedy, ecstasy, doom and so on” he said.

Born in Dvinsk, Russia, Rothko emigrated to the United States at the age of ten and immediately grew to despise the aggressive good cheer and steely optimism of his adopted land. It was, one critic said, the visual equivalent of a condemned prisoner’s last gasp. Mark Rothko: A collection of 312 works (HD)
Description: "There are many painters and artists who emerged after the World War II but Mark Rothko was undoubtedly one of the most highly-regarded painters to emerge from the New York art scene. A bright student at school he soon won a scholarship at Yale University. However the Yale community did not impress him much and he dropped out of College to discover the city of New York. Discovering the artistic society of New York he finally found his niche and likeminded people who inspired him to paint. Working with several eminent artists and teaching some of the most artistic young minds, he developed a style of his own. Rothko, slowly moved away from representational art and started thinking of art as a medium of expressing the emotional and religious experiences. From surrealism to the much noted ‘multi-form’, his art took various forms and shapes. The latter slowly transcended into large rectangular fields of colour which eventually became his trademark. A key figure in modern 20th century painting, Rothko lived his life as a celebrity and he justified his reputation as a tortured artist by slashing his own arms and bleeding to death. Scroll further for more interesting information on this personality."
