The South Branch rises in Mower County as agricultural drainage ditches, which disappear underground, re-emerging as a much cooler stream at Mystery Cave near Preston, Minnesota. The 48°F water creates superb conditions for brook trout.
The river begins at an unnamed lake and heads east then northeast to Otatakan Lake, where it takes in the left tributary Wesley River. It flows east, takes in the diverted waters from Lake St. Joseph as a left tributary, then turns south, passes over the Nattaway Falls, and reaches Adamhay Lake. The river heads west, and reaches its mouth at Anenimus Bay on Lac Seul. Lac Seul flows via the English River, Winnipeg River and Nelson River to Hudson Bay.
From Upper Island Lake, the river heads south and parallels Ontario Highway 552 to that highway's beginning at Ontario Highway 17 at the community of Heyden, then Highway 17 to the Odena neighbourhood of Sault Ste. Marie. It then heads east and southeast to reach its mouth at the St. Marys River, which forms a small delta called Bells Point.

The Minnesota Grape Growers Association (MGGA) is a statewide organization that promotes grape growing and wine making in the state and also in cold-hardy climates. Minnesota is home to the International Cold Climate Wine Competition (ICCWC) hosted annually by a partnership between MGGA and University of Minnesota. This is the only wine competition solely dedicated to the promotion of quality wines made mainly from cold-hardy grape varieties. In 2014, the 6th annual competition saw 284 wines entered from 59 commercial wineries in 11 states. Awards were based on blind tastings by 21 expert judges, who include enologists, wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers, and wine educators.
The Minnesota River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 332 miles (534km) long, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It drains a watershed of nearly 17,000 square miles (44,000km2), 14,751 square miles (38,200km2) in Minnesota and about 2,000sqmi (5,200km2) in South Dakota and Iowa.

Minnesota River is shown on the 1757 edition of Mitchell Map as "Ouadebameniſsouté [Watpá Mnísota] or R. St. Peter". On June 19, 1852, acting upon a request from the Minnesota territorial legislature, the United States Congress decreed the aboriginal name for the river, Minnesota, to be the river’s official name and ordered all agencies of the federal government to use that name when referencing it.
