Roosevelt Island is a narrow island in New York City's East River. It lies between Manhattan Island to its west and the borough of Queens on Long Island to its east, and is part of the borough of Manhattan. Running from the equivalent of East 46th to 85th Streets on Manhattan Island, it is about 2 miles (3.2km) long, with a maximum width of 800 feet (240m), and a total area of 147 acres (0.59km2). Together with Mill Rock, Roosevelt Island constitutes Manhattan's Census Tract 238, which has a land area of 0.279sqmi (0.72km2), and had a population of 9,520, as of the 2000 United States Census. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation estimated its population was about 12,000 in 2007.
The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by New Netherlanders, and during the colonial era and later as Blackwell's Island. It was known as Welfare Island when it was used principally for hospitals, from 1921 to 1971. It was re-named Roosevelt Island in 1971 after Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The station opened on October 29, 1989 in conjunction with the partial completion of the 63rd Street Tunnel. The station has two tracks and two side platforms. It is the fourth deepest station in the New York City Subway at about 100 feet (30m) below street level (approximately 10 stories deep) behind 34th Street – Hudson Yards, 190th Street, and 191st Street stations, also in Manhattan. Due to its depth, the station contains several features not common in the rest of the system. Similar to stations of the Paris Metro and Washington Metro, the Roosevelt Island station was built with a high vaulted ceiling and a mezzanine directly visible above the tracks. These features can also be found on some of the system's other deep stations, including Grand Central, 168th Street, and 181st Street stations, along with future stations along the Second Avenue Subway. The station is fully ADA-accessible, with elevators to street level. Fare control is in a glass-enclosed building off of Main Street. West of this station, there is a diamond crossover and two bellmouths for possible service south on the Second Avenue Subway. There is an emergency exit from the future LIRR's lower level at the middle of each platform.
Roosevelt Island is an ice-covered island, about 130km (81mi) long in a NW-SE direction, 65km (40mi) wide and about 7,500km2 (2,896sqmi) in area, lying in the eastern part of the Ross Ice Shelf of Antarctica. Its central ridge rises to about 550m (1,804ft) above sea level, but this and all other elevations of the island are completely covered by ice, so that the island is invisible at ground level.
The existence and extent of the island is made clear by examination of how the ice flows above it. It was named by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd in 1934 for Franklin D. Roosevelt, then President of the United States. Byrd was the leader of the expedition that discovered the island.
Roosevelt Island lies within the boundaries of the Ross Dependency, New Zealand's Antarctic claim.
Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation was created by New York State in 1984 to manage development and operations of Roosevelt Island. Before RIOC there existed other state agencies which ran the island's day-to-day operations such as the Welfare Island Development Corporation and later the Roosevelt Island Development Corporation. The first RIOC Board and President were appointed by the Governor in 1986.
The New York State Urban Development Corporation (UDC) operated New York City’s Welfare Island, as Roosevelt Island was previously known, prior to RIOC. Development of the island was based on the principles of urban "new communities" under President Lyndon Johnson’s "Great Society" programs of the 1960s and early 1970s, and development of the "new" community there was authorized by the 99-year ground lease and accompanying General Development Plan (GDP) agreed upon by New York City and New York State in 1969. The NY State GDP, which has been amended from time to time, provides for the development of housing, shops and community facilities for a mixed-income, handicap-accessible residential neighborhood.

ROOSEVELT ISLAND New York City Drone Video
Between the Manhattan towers and revitalizing Queens lies one of New York City's cleanest, safest and most beautiful places to live and work.

Now, Roosevelt Island is home to more than 12,000 people. There are four major recreational facilities on the island: Capobianco Field (baseball), Firefighter's Field (soccer), Octagon Field (multi), and Pony Field (multi).
The video opens Blackwell Island Lighthouse Park and highlights the major hospitals and facilities on the way toward the Roosevelt Island Bridge and Tramway Cars. In the middle, you see Strecker Lab and Smallpox Hospital - a pair of buildings which helped shape the course of history. The video closes with the Four Freedoms Park and the amazing view south of the island from above the park.

Tomas "Tom" Delgado (@tomdnyc) takes you on a complete tour of Roosevelt Island, a lesser known island between Manhattan and Queens that used to house convicts and lunatics. Shot by Phil Rizdon. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!

Between the Manhattan towers and revitalizing Queens lies one of New York City's cleanest, safest and most beautiful places to live and work.
Cool fact: Garbage on the island is sucked away by the world's largest Automated Vacuum Collection system - a network of 2-feet wide diameter tubes which suck 10 tons of trash from residents' homes to a central location on island, where it's loaded into shipping containers and boated away.
But how did this pristine place get here? 1,000 years ago, the Native American Lenape people called these 150 acres Minnehanonck. In the mid-1600s, Netherland colonizers called it Hog Island and colonial England named it Blackwell Island in the 1700s. During the 1900s, New Yorkers knew it as Welfare Island, as the state sponsored numerous longterm hospitals there. It received its current title in 1973, named after President FDR.
Let's explore Roosevelt Island, in New York City during COVID-19 and see how things have changed. I'll share some of the history, and show you some really neat places to go in one of my favorite places in NYC. Leave a comment so YouTube knows you're watching!

Roosevelt.
Hudson president David Kramer recalled that when the companies were brought together by the RooseveltIsland Operating Corporation to complete the island’s master plan, “We didn’t really know each other.
