The Catholic Church has a history that spans over two thousand years, and it began with none other than Jesus Christ himself. At least, that is what modern popes believe. But at first, there was just one church, and there was no division between Catholics, Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, and other branches of Christianity. Christians all over the known world were united, and together, they made their spirituality bloom. Their religion took over the lives of villagers, nobles, kings, queens, and even newly-arrived pagan armies that came to conquer Europe.

What does Catholic mean?
In the Nicene Creed we state that we believe in "one, holy, CATHOLIC, and apostolic Church." In the Apostles' Creed we state that we believe in the "holy Catholic Church."

Roman Catholic (term)
The term "Roman Catholic" appeared in the English language at the beginning of the 17th century, to differentiate members of the Catholic Church from other Christians who use the term "Catholic"; comparable terms in other languages already existed. Being "catholic" is one of the Four Marks of the Church set out in the Nicene Creed, a statement of belief accepted by many churches even if not in communion with the Pope.
In popular usage, "Catholic Church" is usually understood to mean the same as "Roman Catholic Church". It has continued to be widely used in the English language ever since, although its usage has changed over the centuries. The church widely known as the "Catholic Church" consists of 24 autonomous churches— one "Western" and 23 "Eastern" — governed by two sets of Codes of Ca...

Aquinas’s 3rd Proof for the Existence of God #aquinas #catholic #proofofgod #existenceofgod
Imagine you're standing in the middle of a ballroom with a hanging chandelier at the center of it, and you ask someone in the room, “how is that chandelier hanging off the ground?” They say, “there is no reason.” You would not accept that, because if it's possible for things to go without explanation, then your very thoughts may have no explanation,
which would be the end of science as we know it through the end of any certainty we would have in our own mental faculties. Plus, all the evidence we do have shows and points to the reality that things do have genuine explanations. You would not accept the answer, “no reason,” because there’s nothing about a hanging chandelier or chandeliers as such, which would explain why this one is hanging off the ground instead of lying on the ground,

In the Nicene Creed we state that we believe in "one, holy, CATHOLIC, and apostolic Church." In the Apostles' Creed we state that we believe in the "holy Catholic Church."
What does Catholic mean?
Why is the Roman Catholic Church a "Catholic" Church?
The Meaning of Catholic
The word catholic comes from the Greek word katholikos, which means "universal," or literally "on the whole."
We might think of the meaning of Catholic, therefore, in two ways:
Little "c" Catholic
Little "c" catholic can be used as a term to mean universal. This is the way in which we use the term Catholic in the Nicene Creed. We believe in a universal church that welcomes everyone in the whole world.
Big "C" Catholic
When we write capital "C" Church, we refer to the Roman Catholic Church.
The term Catholic Church appears in the writings of many of the early Church Fathers including Ignatius of Antioch (AD 107), Cyril of Jerusalem (4th century), Augustine of Hippo (4th-5th centuries).
In general, these writers used the term the Catholic Church in comparison to other churches that were disconnected from a bishop or heretical. Therefore, the term Catholic Church was used by bishops and early Christian writers to refer to the one, true Church.
Today the term Catholic is often used to refer to the Roman Catholic Church compared to Protestant churches or Orthodox churches.

The church widely known as the "Catholic Church" consists of 24 autonomous churches— one "Western" and 23 "Eastern" — governed by two sets of Codes of Canon Law. To refer to all 24 autonomous churches together, official church documents often use the term "Catholic Church" or, less frequently, the term "Roman Catholic Church".

The four marks of the Church: http://catholiceducation.org/articles/religion/re0106.html
The three chief points below mark the essentials of Catholic fullness. They are also true of the Eastern Orthodox and smaller Eastern churches which retain a true priesthood and sacraments although they are not in full communion with the Bishop of Rome:
"CCC 815 What are these bonds of unity? Above all, charity "binds everything together in perfect harmony." But the unity of the pilgrim Church is also assured by visible bonds of communion:
- profession of one faith received from the Apostles;
- common celebration of divine worship, especially of the sacraments;
- apostolic succession through the sacrament of Holy Orders, maintaining the fraternal concord of God's family."
For Orthodox Christians, the extent of papal primacy is still an issue of division with Roman and Eastern Catholics, yet ecumenical dialogue with these "sister churches" is beginning to heal the wounds of separation: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/speeches/2004/july/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_20040701_jp-ii-bartholomew-i_en.html
The Catholic Church maintains that the primacy of the Chair of St. Peter is not merely an external element that is sometimes helpful to the whole Church but has been and always will be an integral and organic part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Faith.
Sample early church quotes on papal primacy below:
"Ignatius . . . to the church also which holds the presidency, in the location of the country of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and, because you hold the presidency in love, named after Christ and named after the Father" -- St. Ignatius Of Antioch, (Letter to the Romans 1:1 [107 A.D.]). Cf. LG 13.
"You [the church at Rome] have envied no one, but others you have taught. I desire only that what you have enjoined in your instructions may remain in force" (ibid., 3:1).
"For with this church, by reason of its pre-eminence, the whole Church, that is the faithful everywhere, must necessarily be in accord."-- St. Irenaeus of Lyons, (Against Heresies 3:3:2 [189 A.D.]). Cf. Vatican Council I:DS 3057.

You would not accept the answer, “no reason,” because there’s nothing about a hanging chandelier or chandeliers as such, which would explain why this one is hanging off the ground instead of lying on the ground,
and if they say the explanations the link above it, well why is that link above the ground? And so on and so on...until you get an adequate explanation, like something like a ceiling. In the same way, the only adequate explanation for things which we could easily imagine not existing or existing in a different way, like this entire universe, is something which must exist and could not be different,
this necessary and immutable cause of all things, that explains them is what we mean by the term God.
