Rock Island was originally settled by Native Americans. European explorers and missionaries used it as one of several stops along the Grand Traverse route between upper Michigan and Wisconsin. The island was home to the first permanent European settlement on the Door peninsula, a small fishing village on the eastern shore. The settlers later relocated to nearby Washington Island, leaving the original village abandoned. On the North shore of the island you can still find the grave markers of some of the original villagers.
The island became a navigational landmark in 1836 following the construction of the Potawatomi Lighthouse on the northern tip.
Rock Island is the 17th studio album by the British rock group Jethro Tull, released in 1989. The album continued the hard rock direction the band took on the previous effort, Crest of a Knave (1987). The line-up now included Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Dave Pegg and drummer Doane Perry in his first full recording with the band, although he was already a member of Jethro Tull since 1984. Without a permanent keyboard player, the role was shared by Fairport Convention's Martin Allcock and former Tull member Peter Vettese.
Rock Island went Gold in the UK, with good sales also in Germany, were peak the Nº 5. Good sales also for the "Kissing Willie" single, that reach the Nº 6.
The staging on the 1989 tour supporting Rock Island featured projected silhouettes of lithe dancers during the song "Kissing Willie", ending with an image that bordered on pornographic. The song "Big Riff and Mando" reflects life on the road for the relentlessly touring musicians, giving a wry account of the theft of Barre's prized mandolin by a stage-struck fan.
There's a wide variety of housing available in Rock Island including historic homes, new downtown condos, new construction in the heart of the city, and wooded retreats. The Rock Island-Milan School District, Rockridge School District (southwest portion of city) along with private schools, serve the city. The District (Downtown Rock Island) has art galleries and theaters, nightclubs and coffee shops, and restaurants of all flavors. Golf courses, parks, a casino, botanical center, marina, historic tours, bike paths, and festivals offer entertainment opportunities.
Rock Island is a promontory in West Cork, Ireland, situated about 2 kilometres (1.2mi) south of the village of Goleen, at the entrance to the inlet of Crookhaven. Not a true island, Rock Island is surrounded on three sides by sea while a small strip of land with a road connects it to the mainland. It is notable for the Crookhaven Lighthouse which lights the way into the natural harbour of Crookhaven. Surrounding the lighthouse are nine cottages, once the property of Irish Lighthouses, now privately owned holiday cottages. These were formerly the accommodation for the lighthouse keepers and their families of three local lighthouses: Crookhaven, Mizen Head and Fastnet Rock. The lighthouses are now fully automatic, requiring no keepers. Towards the west end of the peninsula is a terrace of houses built in 1907 as a coastguard station, now converted to private holiday accommodation; this replaced an earlier range of buildings erected in the early 19th century, when Crookhaven was a significant centre both for legitimate coastal shipping and for smuggling activity.
Wisconsin's geography is diverse, with the Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupying the western part of the state and lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is second to Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline.
Wisconsin is known as "America's Dairyland" because it is one of the nation's leading dairy producers, particularly famous for cheese. Manufacturing, especially paper products, information technology (IT), and tourism are also major contributors to the state's economy.
The Wisconsin Winery Association is a statewide organization that promotes wine making in the state.
History
The first wine grapes were planted in Wisconsin by Agoston Haraszthy in the mid-19th century. Before he migrated to California and helped to found the wine industry there, he established a vineyard, winery and wine cellars overlooking the Wisconsin River at what is today the Wollersheim Winery near Prairie du Sac. Although Haraszthy found the climate of Wisconsin difficult for wine grape production, later German settlers produced wine using both European and native American grape varieties.
The commission to create the statue of Wisconsin on the top of the dome was originally promised to Helen Farnsworth Mears, originally of Wisconsin. When Daniel Chester French agreed to produce the finial figure, the commission was switched to him.
Description
This work, often referred to as the "Golden Lady", consists of an allegorical figure reminiscent of Athena, dressed in Greek garb, her right arm outstretched to symbolize the state motto, "Forward", and wearing a helmet topped by a badger, the Wisconsin state totem.
The figure's left hand holds a globe with an eagle perched on top. Across the eagle's chest is a large W, for Wisconsin, a detail hard to discern.
Wisconsin is 15ft 5in (4.70m) tall and weighs 3 short tons (2.7t).
The lady is also in a mural in the House of Representatives.

Driving Around Downtown Rock Island, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Sunday, November 19 2023, I drive around Rock Island, IL to see what's going on.
Due to its geography, Rock Island has a rich history of bridge building, including the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi (now gone), an unusual two-track railroad bridge, and the largest roller dam in the world.
The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was built between Arsenal Island and Davenport in 1856. Many steamboat pilots felt that the bridge had been intentionally positioned to make it hard for them to navigate, and this conflict reflected a larger rivalry: St. Louis and its steamboats against Chicago and its railroads.
Two weeks after the bridge opened, the steamboat Effie Afton collided with the bridge, caught fire, and damaged the bridge. The owner of the Effie...

The city is home to Rock Island Arsenal, the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the US, which employs 6,000 people.

Rock Island, Illinois — On March 31, 2021, local law enforcement received a social media video clip that depicted Deshawn Tatum waving a suspected firearm in Rock Island. Tatum is heard on the video making threats against law enforcement, and a white police SUV car is seen behind Tatum. At that same time, law enforcement were aware that Mr. Tatum had outstanding felony warrants, including a federal warrant for felon in possession of a firearm and a county warrant for criminal damage to property and fleeing & eluding.
On the following day, April 1, 2021, officers from the Rock Island Police Department were conducting surveillance hoping to apprehend Tatum on the outstanding warrants. Officers Lawler and Costas, both wearing body-worn cameras that were active, arrived at the Chippiannock Cemetery shortly after 6:15p.m on April 1st and observed Tatum standing with a group of people.
Lawler and Costas walked towards Tatum calling his name, and Tatum is seen running across the cemetery and dropping a black bag, which is picked up by Costas. Lawler and Costas both chase Tatum on foot across the cemetery, then west on 12th Street in Rock Island. Officers are heard yelling for Deshawn Tatum to “drop the gun” multiple times. A gun is later found lying on the ground in the path of the foot chase. An officer’s squad camera captures the moment Tatum runs by and throws the gun on the ground.
The foot pursuit to apprehend Tatum continued onto the next block until Tatum turned south towards the Chicken Shack gas station on 11th Street. A white Chrysler 300 is seen parked in front of the Chicken Shack and a female is opening the driver’s side door when surveillance captures Tatum push the female aside and get inside the driver’s seat. At that same time, Officer Scully, dressed in plain clothes and driving an unmarked car, drives into the gas station along with Officer Waddle in his squad.
Both officers exit their vehicles and run to the driver’s side with their weapons drawn and shout commands for Tatum to get out of the vehicle. Officer Lawler is seen approaching the vehicle from behind and walks to the passenger side with his gun drawn and yells for Tatum to get out. Both Waddle and Scully are seen trying to remove Tatum from the driver’s seat when the white car suddenly accelerates at a high rate of speed in reverse. Waddle and Scully are seen being dragged and appear under the driver’s side of the car when it ultimately collides into the gas station building with bricks landing on the trunk.
A gunshot is seen coming out of the passenger side window towards Officer Costas, who is standing outside of the vehicle, and Officer Scully and Lawler are seen firing at Tatum, who is still in the driver’s seat. Officers assist Waddle, who is picked up off the ground with blood coming down his face, and Scully reaches in the driver’s seat to retrieve a firearm— presumably Waddle’s duty weapon that he lost control of during the dragging and collision. Another officer arrives on scene and assists the officers in immediately giving CPR to Tatum, who has been brought to the ground next to the car. Officer Costas is assisting with CPR but can be seen stumbling and wiping blood off his face as well.
Within several minutes, a large crowd gathers at the scene and attempts to get in the officers’ way. Other officers arrive to assist with crowd control. Tatum is given CPR continuously for seven minutes until paramedics are able to get into the area and transport him to the hospital. Deshawn Tatum was transported to Unity Point/Trinity West and was pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Mark Moore shortly thereafter. All four officers involved were transported to Unity Point for medical evaluations and/or treatment and then placed on administrative leave.

Deshawn Tatum was transported to Unity Point/Trinity West and was pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Mark Moore shortly thereafter. All four officers involved were transported to Unity Point for medical evaluations and/or treatment and then placed on administrative leave.

The owner of the Effie Afton sued the bridge company for damages, and Abraham Lincoln was one of the lawyers who defended the railroad. This test case was appealed to the United States Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the railroad in 1872.
