Robert Mann (born July 19, 1920) is a violinist, composer, and conductor.
He was a founding member and first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet for 51 years, and mentor to younger generations of string musicians. He played and performed on many instruments, including those made by Antonio Stradivari and John Young.
Life and work
Born in Portland, Oregon, Mann began his study of the violin at age nine; at 13, he was accepted into the class of Edouard Hurlimann, concertmaster of the Portland Symphony. In 1938, he moved to New York City to enroll in the Juilliard School, where he studied violin with Edouard Dethier, composition with Bernard Wagenaar and Stefan Wolpe, and conducting with Edgar Schenkman. Mann won the prestigious Naumburg Competition in 1941 and made his New York debut two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Shortly after his graduation from Juilliard, he was drafted into the army.
At the invitation of Juilliard’s president, William Schuman, Robert Mann founded the Juilliard String Quartet in 1946 and served as the ensemble’s first violinist until his retirement from the quartet in 1997. The quartet, which celebrated its golden jubilee during the 1996–97 season, had played approximately 5,000 concerts and performed more than 600 works, including some 100 premieres. Its discography includes recordings of more than 100 compositions. They have received three Grammy awards for their recordings.
Mann is the son of Robert Mann, Sr. (1924-2008), a native of Beaumont, Texas, and the former Charlene Elizabeth Wellhausen (born c. 1934). The senior Mann died in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the place of residence of their son, Paul Edward Mann. Bob Mann, who was also born in Beaumont, has a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Luker of Seabrook, near Houston, Texas. The senior Mann was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard during World War II and was employed by Sun Oil Company and was for more than two decades a Church of Christ minister in Texas, Louisiana, and New Mexico.
Mann is married to the former Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Horaist (born June 1961), the executive director of the Louisiana Prison Chapel Foundation, which in 2013 sponsored the drama, The Life of Jesus Christ, performed by inmates at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola. The couple has two children.
Mann was born into a naval family. His father, the elder Robert Mann, was a captain in the navy. He was mortally wounded while commanding HMSMilford during the capture of the French privateerGloire on 7 March 1762, during the Seven Years' War. His son, the younger Robert Mann, was born c. 1748. He embarked on a naval career and was commissioned as lieutenant on 26 May 1768.
American War of Independence
On 24 June 1776, during the American War of Independence, received a promotion to commander and given his first command, the 10-gun HMS Zephyr. Mann was promoted to post-captain on 30 May 1777 and appointed to command the 32-gun HMSAlarm in October that year, where he remained until April 1779.
Mann next assumed command of the 32-gun HMSCerberus in July 1779. In 1780 Mann fell in with a Spanish fleet consisting of twelve sail of the line and several frigates under Don Joseph Solano. He followed the Spanish for several days, proceeding to give the earliest intelligence dispatches to Admiral Sir George Rodney, whom he found at anchor at Barbados. On 25 February 1781, whilst cruising twenty leagues off Cape Finisterre, he captured the Spanish 28-gun frigate Graña, under Don Nicolás de Medina.Graña was a month out of Ferrol but had not captured anything. In the action with Cerberus she lost her first lieutenant and six men killed, and seventeen wounded, out of her crew of 166 men. The Spanish officers fought as long as they could, but their men deserted them. Captain Mann in contrast was highly pleased with the behaviour of the officers and men of the Cerberus, in which only two were wounded. From October 1782 until the end of the war, he commanded the 64-gun HMSScipio.
"Those guys are looking for a quick turnaround and are willing to take the relatively high risk that goes along with it."
"It's not anything that anybody needs, frankly. The airlines don't need it. Consumers don't need it."
"My sense is that (Northwest) turned the corner as of the middle of last week, and simply moved on to a new structure – both organizational and cost – for their maintenance operations,"
"My sense is that (Northwest) turned the corner as of the middle of last week, and simply moved on to a new structure -- both organizational and cost -- for their maintenance operations,"
"Things have improved significantly in almost every dimension."
"We've done it in Tibet, and we've done one in Greenland."
"If they've got concerns then my guess is others will have concerns."
"It's a mystery that's been buried and only now that the ice and snow has melted away, has this mystery surfaced. Now, what we have to do is unravel that mystery and we just started to do that."
"I feel pretty confident it's all going to come together for a successful identification,"
"We don't have to go to a glacier in Tibet to find a missing airman, ... We've got some of them in our own backyard."
