The main tributary of the river is the River Lathkill, which enters approximately one mile from its mouth.
The River Wye is one of Derbyshire's best known rivers and is popular with anglers owing to the large numbers of wild brown, rainbow trout and grayling it contains. The alkalinity of the Wye provides a rich source of nutrients that leads to an abundance of insects, invertebrates and other wildlife. This ensures that the Trout and Grayling grow quickly on a diet of freshwater shrimp, sedge and upwinged flies (to name but a few of the foods available). Some of the largest populations of Water Voles in Britain can also be found along the River Wye.
The River Wye (Welsh:Afon Gwy) is the fifth-longest river in the UK, stretching some 215 kilometres (134mi) from source to sea. For much of its length the river forms part of the border between England and Wales. The Wye Valley (lower part) is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Wye is important for nature conservation and recreation.
Etymology
The Wye's Latin name is Vaga, an adjective meaning 'wandering'. The Tithe map references a Vagas Field in both Whitchurch and Chepstow. The modern Welsh name Gwy may be derived from old Welsh Gwybiol or Gwyr (crooked wandering hills).
Derbyshire (i/ˈdɑːrbᵻʃər/ or /ˈdɑːrbɪʃɪər/; abbreviated Derbys. or Derbs.) is a county in the East Midlands of England. A substantial portion of the Peak District National Park lies within Derbyshire. The southern extremity of the Pennine range of hills extends into the north of the county. The county contains part of the National Forest, and borders on Greater Manchester to the northwest, West Yorkshire to the north, South Yorkshire to the northeast, Nottinghamshire to the east, Leicestershire to the southeast, Staffordshire to the west and southwest and Cheshire also to the west.
Kinder Scout, at 636 metres (2,087ft), is the highest point in the county, whilst Trent Meadows, where the River Trent leaves Derbyshire, is its lowest point at 27 metres (89ft). The River Derwent is the county's longest river at 66 miles (106km), and runs roughly north to south through the county. In 2003 the Ordnance Survey placed Church Flatts Farm at Coton in the Elms (near Swadlincote) as the furthest point from the sea in Great Britain.
Living by a ‘dying river’ - how pollution has put the Wye into decline
Now, there's a call for urgent action to improve the health of the River Wye after tests showed a drop in important species like Atlantic salmon and white-clawed crayfish.
It's meant Natural England has downgraded the environmental health of the river to "unfavourable declining".
Conservationists say without significant intervention, the Wye may never recover.
They're calling for a halt to any new intensive farming units in the area - saying manure from poultry is a key reason for the state of the river.

Under the surface of the River Wye
So once again the plight of the River Wye has featured heavily in the media this week after an early season Algal bloom on the lower river.
Whilst it’s a good thing that the River is getting the coverage it needs to put a stop to pollution by various sources, the picture painted to the watching world is that of a dead environment, with little or no life.
Those that live on the river know this is far from the truth, and whilst I understand the need shock the world into action, the reality is it is incredibly damaging to tourism reliant businesses in the Wye Valley.

This video was filmed at Whitney on Wye on Friday and hopefully shows the true, and real time picture of life beneath the surface of the Wye.
Not covering up of denying pollution, just showing that our river, whilst in need of attention, is still very much alive and kicking.
