The source of the River Waveney is a ditch on the east side of the B1113 road between the villages of Redgrave, Suffolk and South Lopham, Norfolk. The ditch on the other side of the road is the source of the River Little Ouse which continues the county boundary and, via the Great Ouse, reaches the sea at King's Lynn. It is thus claimed that during periods of heavy rainfall Norfolk can be considered to be an island. The explanation of this oddity is that the valley in which the rivers rise was formed, not by these rivers but by water spilling from Lake Fenland. This was a periglacial lake of the Devensian glacial, fifteen or twenty thousand years ago. The ice sheet closed the natural drainage from the Vale of Pickering, the Humber and The Wash so that a lake of a complex shape formed in the Vale of Pickering, the Yorkshire Ouse valley, the lower Trent valley and the Fenland basin. This valley was its spillway into the southern North Sea basin, thence to the English Channel basin.
As a result of the 2011 election the Conservatives lost overall control, with both it and the Labour party represented by 23 councillors, the balance of the council being made up of one Green Party and one Independent councillor. A series of procedural moves led to the formation of a Conservative-led administration.
1997-2010: The District of Waveney except the wards of Blything, Halesworth, and Southwold.
2010-present: The District of Waveney wards of Beccles North, Beccles South, Bungay, Carlton, Carlton Colville, Gunton and Corton, Harbour, Kessingland, Kirkley, Lothingland, Normanston, Oulton, Oulton Broad, Pakefield, St Margaret’s, The Saints, Wainford, Whitton, and Worlingham.
The seat is based on the coastal town of Lowestoft, which today is generally Labour-voting, because of its recent history as a declining seaside resort, fishing and industrial town. However, the constituency also takes in the small towns of Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth. These along with the smaller inland rural villages are considerably more supportive of Conservatives.
History
The seat was created in 1983 under the Act implementing the third periodic review of Westminster constituencies, broadly replacing Lowestoft, which the first victor of the new seat had served since 1959.

Pack-Rafting Wild Camp Adventure. Following the River Waveney from the Source. Tarp and Bivvy.
In this video, I join Martin from vildmark.co.uk for a pack-rafting micro-adventure along the river Waveney on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. We start our journey at the source of the river in the Lopham and Redgrave Fen Nature Reserve. Carrying the boats and all of our gear, we hike the first few miles to Scole, just to the east of the market town of Diss where we can finally get our boats into the river.
This section of the river Waveney is often choked up with weeds during the summer months, so we had a battle on our hands. We also encountered several downed trees and weirs to negotiate, so, by the time we reached our camp spot for the night, we were ehausted. A quick dinner and a well earned beer and it was time to get some sleep. The second day brought us glorious sunshine for our...

Greentraveller Video of Waveney River Centre, The Broads, Norfolk
The Waveney River Centre is an oasis of activity in what truly feels like the middle of nowhere down in the southern Broads. It's many things rolled into one: a campsite, right by the water, with a heated indoor pool, shop, café and its own pub, as well a few holiday lodges; it offers moorings to hire boats and has a private marina; and it rents day boats and canoes from what must be one of the best locations from which to explore this part of the Broads national park -- and which also offers plenty of opportunity for walks. Its green agenda is clear: power is partly supplied by 29kw of solar panels, it has an energy-efficient pool and low-energy lighting throughout, pretty much everything is recycled, and the centre has won the David Bellamy conservation award 3 years running. But maybe t...

Where Norfolk & Suffolk meet. Waveney Valley in East Anglia from a drone.
I love the natural beauty of the River Waveney as it winds slowly through this special East Anglian landscape. Norfolk and Suffolk meet here. Old and shapely trees dot its banks and cattle graze lazily on either side. It is not a scene visible from the main road, despite its proximity, making it all the more special. I particularly love the languid movement of the cow and the swan in the closing scene. I hope you enjoy it, too! Thick reeds and countless fallen trees and log jams try to halt our journey, but we find a way through, scraping, squeezing, pushing and pulling our boats ever forwards.
Sadly, at the village of Mendham, I had to leave Martin to continue his journey onwards towards the sea, but he has documented his complete adventure in a video on his channel (link below).
