Action Man is an action figure launched in Britain in 1966 by Palitoy as a licensed copy of Hasbro's American "movable fighting man": G.I. Joe.
Action Man was originally produced and sold in the United Kingdom and Australia by Palitoy Ltd of Coalville, Leicestershire from 1966 until 1984 (Palitoy also offered sub-licences to various toy manufacturers in various markets).
The figure and accessories were originally based on the Hasbro (US) 1964 G.I. Joe figure (for 1966–1969 production). Hasbro's G.I. Joe figure was patented in 1966. Even the specific method of attaching the appendages was patented as a "Connection for Use in Toy Figures". The first Action Man figures were Action Soldier, Action Sailor and Action Pilot. All were available in the four original hair colours: Blonde, Auburn, Brown and Black. They were accompanied by outfits depicting United States Forces of WWII and the Korean War. In later years, the figures and accompanying uniforms and accessories would reflect the forces of the United Kingdom rather than the USA.
Action Man was subsequently reintroduced in 1993, based on the G.I. Joe Hall of Fame figure of that time.
Action Man was relaunched in 1993 by Hasbro. The initial releases were the US Hall of Fame figures modelled on the 33⁄4" GI Joe line-up. This was followed by a 30th anniversary edition modelled after the original 1966 release, but using the GI Joe "Hall of Fame" body, that lacked the articulation, possibility, and attention to scale and proportion of the original figure and accessories. A variety of body types were subsequently offered, in different price ranges. None of the newer bodies have the range of articulation or attention to scale of the vintage figures. This version of the toy tended away from the more militaristic theme in favour of an "extreme sports" theme, and introduced a fantasy terrorist antagonist in the form of Dr. X. The usual themed toys, stationery and other items have also been marketed.
The Action Man toy line and comic ended in January 2006 to be replaced by the spin-off TV show and toy line; A.T.O.M. (known in the UK as Action Man: A.T.O.M.).
In 2009, Hasbro briefly released a new wave of Action Man toys exclusively to Tesco stores however, the toy line has now ended once again.
Action Man was a Canadian-American CGI animated TV series based on the toy line of the same name. The show is unrelated to the 1995 show. In this series, Alex Mann is an extreme sports athlete known as "Action Man" and is a member of Team Xtreme. A video game named Action Man: Search for Base X was released based on the 2000 series.
Alex Mann, Action Man's civilian identity, is an extreme sports athlete of Team Xtreme. Danger and adrenaline trigger hidden mental powers called AMP (Advanced Macro Probability) Factor, a result of secret experiments by his former high school coach Simon Grey. With it, Alex is able to calculate all future possibilities, choosing the best course of action. Alex "Action" Mann, Desmond "Grinder" Sinclair, Agnes "Fidget" Wilson, and Ricky Singh-Baines must stop arch-enemy Doctor X, a brilliant geneticist and bio-engineer who stops at nothing to duplicate AMP Factor to rebuild Earth with the genetically enhanced neo-humanity.
Action Man is a 1995 British children's animated television show, created by DIC Entertainment. The cartoon is based on the Hasbrotoy line of the same name. The show focuses on Action Man, a member of an elite multinational task force named Action Force who fight against the terrorist Dr.X and his 'Council of Doom'. Action Man is also portrayed as being an amnesiac who is trying to unlock the mystery of his past.
The show also featured live action segments before and after the main show.
Action Man was a UK comic series published by Panini Comics, based on the toy line of the same name. It ran for 138 issues between 1996 and 18 January 2006 before being surpassed by spin-off series Action Man: A.T.O.M..
The comic was originally published every month but this was later changed to every three weeks. The final editor was Ed Caruana.
Strip
The comic strip was the main feature for each issue. At first, the stories in each issue featured little to no continuity between them however, as the comic progressed, full story arcs would become more prominent. Many different characters were introduced over the comics course. The comic always focused on Action Man's efforts to thwart the evil plans of his arch enemy, the mad scientist, Dr.X and his 'Council of Doom'. The first strip featured in the comic was named 'Into Action'.
2003 Arc
2003 introduced the fictional Island X. An 'X' shaped island which was the home of Dr.X and the Council of Doom. This would become the setting for many stories for years to come. The plot focused on Dr.X building a huge Death ray on Island X which he would use to destroy capital cities across the world unless he was made world leader. Action Man had to explore Island X in his quest to find the doctor and they would have several confrontations before the final battle in issue 100. The outcome was shown in the following issue on a giant poster. A new villain named 'Antifreeze' was introduced this year.
