Richard "Dick" Hudson (born 18 September 1939), a son of the horticulturalist and bomb-disposal officer John Pilkington Hudson, is a British linguist. He has lived in England for most of his life (with three years in New Zealand, 1945–1948). He turned into a linguist via Loughborough Grammar School in Leicestershire (1948–1958), Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (1958–1961) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (PhD, 1961–1964). He worked with Michael Halliday as research assistant on two projects at University College London: on the grammar of scientific English with Rodney Huddleston (1964–1967), and on Linguistics and English Teaching (1967–1970). In 1970, he was appointed lecturer at UCL, where he spent the rest of his working life, mostly in the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics, retiring in 2004. His main research achievement is a general theory of language structure called word grammar. He has also worked to build bridges between academic linguistics and teaching of (and about) language in UK schools.
Richard Phineas Hudson (1860 – 2 May 1953) was a Reform Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. Born in Ireland, he was a tea planter in British Ceylon before becoming a fruit grower in New Zealand.
Early life
Hudson was born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland in 1860. He received his education at Wills Grammar School, at Fermoy College, and at Crawford's Military Academy. For seven years, he served in the Royal Artillery Militia and gained the rank of captain. He then lived in Ceylon for 23 years, where he had tea and coffee plantations, and where he was chairman of the Haputale Planters' Association. He was credited with uniting the Ceylon tea-growers, them agreeing to pay a tax to an industry body that would be used to market Ceylon tea in overseas markets.
New Zealand
In 1908, he emigrated to New Zealand. He started growing fruit and within a short time, he held numerous offices. At first, he was president of the Motueka District Fruitgrowers' Union, then president of the Motueka District Fruit-growers' Association, then president of the Nelson District Fruit-growers' Association, before being elected president of the New Zealand Fruit-growers' Federation in September 2013 after only six years in the business. Hudson was a member of the Motueka Harbour Board.

Biography
He began working with sculpture at a relatively late age after many years of traveling. He is best known for his work in polished mirrored steel, bronze and marble with a number of Monumental works on public display.
His "work on the female figure but has of late worked with an abstract expression. His soft lines and voluptuous, nearly bombastic style combined with inspiration from Modernism’s great names like Henry Moore, Jean Arp and Constantin Brancusi rocketed his career forward."

Richard Hudson was a member of Elmer Gantry’s Velvet Opera, in which he played drums and sitar and sang. In 1970, he and band-mate John Ford joined Strawbs. Hudson and Ford began to co-write material which appeared to be aiming in a slightly different direction to the compositions of Strawbs' main writer, Dave Cousins. In 1973 after a 52-date tour to promote the album Bursting at the Seams, there were acrimonious exchanges (which both parties now regret). Hudson and Ford left to form Hudson Ford. Hudson at this point switched from playing drums to guitar and sang more lead vocals.
The punk era sounded the death knell of many progressive rock acts, including Hudson Ford. Hudson, Ford and Terry Cassidy founded the mock punk group The Monks and, more strangely, High Society, which performed a pastiche of 1930s music.
