Richard Holmes | This Long Pursuit: Reflections of a Romantic Biographer
Recorded March 21, 2017
“Almost unfairly gifted both as a writer of living, luminous prose and as a tireless researcher” (Time), Richard Holmes is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a Fellow of the British Academy, and a knight in the Order of the British Empire. He is best known for his biographies of Romanticism’s leading figures, including The Age of Wonder, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Royal Society Prize. This Long Pursuit is a meditation on the art of biography that fuses the author’s own story as a biographer with a history of the genre that reveals how it expresses both fiction and fact.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Military historian Richard Holmes turns his attention to the infamous First World War trench line, the Western Front. Of the nine million British and Dominion soldiers who were killed in action in the Great War, most died here. In this thorough examination of the role the Front played in the war, the eminent historian Richard Holmes considers its initial creation, the rapid expansion of the British army (which led to problems with the supply of men and munitions), the challenge of coping with life and death at the Front, and the regular attempts by soldiers to 'break the trench'. He also examines two major battles in detail, thos of the Somme and Verdun. Richly detailed and highly authoritative, Holmes' work clarifies the complexities of the Western Front and examines its context within the most bitter and bloody of wars.
—
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard Holmes was educated at Cambridge, Northern Illinois and Reading University. He was a member of the Department of War Studies at RMA Sandhurst between 1969 and 1985, when he left to command 2nd Battalion The Wessex Regiment. He was appointed Professor of Military and Security Studies at Cranfield University in 1995. Professor Holmes has written over a dozen books on military topics, is general editor of Oxford University Press's Companion to Military History and he has written and presented several television programmes, including two six-part BBC TWO series, War Walks I and War Walks II, as well as a series on the Western Front which was televised in the summer of 1999.
