Richard Bates (born 1829, date of death unknown) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor.
A native of Wales, Bates immigrated to the U.S. and joined the Navy from the state of New York. By May 10, 1866, he was serving as a seaman on the USSDe Soto. On that day, while the De Soto was off the coast of Eastport, Maine, he and two shipmates rescued two sailors from the USSWinooski from drowning. For this action, he and his shipmates, Captain of the Afterguard John Brown and Seaman Thomas Burke, were awarded the Medal of Honor three months later, on August 1.
Bates made his Minor Counties Championship debut for Wiltshire against Cheshire in 1997. From 1997 to 2004, he represented the county in 48 Minor Counties Championship matches, the last of which came against Cornwall. Bates also represented Wiltshire in the MCCA Knockout Trophy. His debut in that competition came against Norfolk in 1997. From 1997 to 2004, he represented Wiltshire in 19 Trophy matches, the last of which came against Northumberland.
In 1993, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire against Oxford University. From 1993 to 1999, he represented the county in 33 first-class matches, the last of which came against Northamptonshire. In his 33 first-class matches, he scored 450 runs at an average of 12.50, with a high score of 34, while in the field he took 18 catches. With the ball he took 50 wickets at a bowling average of 50.40, with a single five wicket haul which gave him best figures of 5/88.
