This piece is very much in a Berliozian style (especially the long melodic lines) and builds to quite an impassioned climax.

PLOT : While Gunther, king of the Burgundians, dreams of new conquests, his sister Hilda has fallen in love with the Frankish hero Sigurd, who avenged her father’s death and saved her from captivity. Uta, her nurse, promises to make Sigurd fall in love with her, thanks to a magic potion. Sigurd, disguised as Gunther, overcomes these obstacles to win Brunehild for Gunther. Brunehild, however, loves Sigurd, and a jealous Hilda reveals that Sigurd, not Gunther, rescued the Valkyrie. The enchantment on Sigurd is broken, and, now madly in love with Brunehild, plans to take her away from Gunther as he rescued her from Odin. But Gunther has Hagen murder Sigurd while hunting. Brunehild mounts Sigurd’s funeral pyre, and Hilda, infuriated by her brother’s crime and cowardice, sends a bracelet to Attila which will bring down his vengeance on Gunther. Finally, an apotheosis shows Sigurd and Brunehild ascending to Valhalla, where Odin forgives them.
‘Sigurd’ is the French answer to Wagner’s ‘Ring des Nibelungen’. Both operas are based on the first part of the ‘Nibelungelied’, which tells of Siegfried’s wooing of Brünhild and his murder by Hagen. Although Reyer’s opera was produced eight years after ‘Götterdämmerung’ (1876), the last part of the Ring Cycle, Reyer’s opera is not an imitation of Wagner. Reyer had completed the opera almost fifteen years before its Brussels première; he had completed the draft by 1867, a couple of years before the first performance of ‘Das Rheingold’ (1869), but found it difficult to get the work staged. At the time, Reyer had heard no Wagner opera later than ‘Lohengrin’ (1850) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si4yfb43FTU&list=PLoB7Fd8EvhHZjnlENMXjMihE5EuUfb307], which he admired, and the ‘Tristan und Isolde’ (1865) prelude, which, like Berlioz, he detested.

Rose Caron (1857-1930) sings from “Sigurd” opera by Ernest Reyer.
She created the role of Brunehild in Sigurd in 1884--she sang the role at the Paris premiere in 1885.
Ernest Reyer’s Sigurd, from 1884, is a French opera that uses the same source materials that inspired Richard Wagner’s Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.
Reyer’s opera was popular in its day but is forgotten today.
Rose Caron was a French operatic soprano.
Caron was born in 17 November 1857 at Monnerville and studied at the Paris Conservatoire.
She made her concert debut in 1880.
Marie Sasse helped her to get engagements at the opera in Brussels.
Her first operatic appearance in Brussels was as Alice in Meyerbeer's Robert le Diable, followed by Salomé in Massenet's Hérodiade and Marguerite in Gounod's Faust.
The title roles in Benjamin Godard's Jocelyn (1888) and Reyer's Salammbo (1890) and were also created by Caron in Brussels.
She died on April 9, 1930.

Mit: Marc Heller, Kartal Karagedik, Vazgen Ghazaryan, Juri Batukov, Máté Sólyom-Nagy, Ilia Papandreou, Marisca Mulder, Katja Bildt, u.a.
