Tv on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
TV On The Radio, New York's duo of vocalist Tunde Adebimpe (who graduated in cinematography) and multi-instrumentalist David Sitek (who is also a producer), debuted with a lo-fi limited-edition 24-song cassette, later retitled OK Calculator (Brooklyn Milk, 2002) and shortened to 18 songs.
The unlikely wedding of doo-wop, shoegazing and digital ambience turned Return To Cookie Mountain (4AD, 2006) into an even more tormented sonic feast. The human voice dominates the cacophonous merry-go-round of Wash the Day, the demonic singalong Let the Devil In, and, of course, A Method (a song of a-cappella Beach Boys-esque multi-part harmonies). TV On The Radio | Return To Cookie Mountain | Vinyl Me, Please
While the Return to Cookie Mountain was created with guitar pedals and ennui, it resolves that to stay alive and sane in the world, you need to believe in love, believe in your ability to overcome your base instincts, believe in the power of being together with other people, and believe in the power of your art to give you personal liberation. A return to the innocence and fantasy of before might not be possible, but this album has no choice but to try.

But the real strokes of (vocal) genius are chaotic creations such as Playhouses (acid harmonies drenched in rhythmic neurosis) and I Was A Lover (sung in a Prince-esque falsetto). The rock epos surfaces rarely: mainly in Wolf Like Me, a fibrillating boogie with a defiant melodic approach reminiscent of the New York Dolls, and the gargantuan rhythm'n'blues Blues From Down Here. Despite all the (stylistic) furor, the band remains surprisingly close to the classic format of the rock song, a self-evident fact in the catchy soul ballad Province, another falsetto-driven number, or the emphatic glam ballad Dirty Whirlwind. TV On The Radio found a way to make vocals and guitars relevant again in the age of chamber, electronic and digital arrangements.

Eyes wide mine, suddenly everything Flies by fine, mind goes on holiday In its stead, clicking along the curb Clucking tongues how could they have the nerve There is hardly a method you know It's a broken poem, started up yesterday And it came true now, mind was on holiday It's an open road will we soon see the end It's an open book, a story to tell the band There is hardly a method you know I'm a storm faced cloud, hanging in dystrophy I'm a cold, base clown laughing at enemies It's a rough wild world could you please chaperone It's a mind field trip, oh leave it the fuck alone This is hardly a method you know There's a purple pain strangling yesterday There's a purple stain spattered on interstates It's an awkward stage grasping at anything Cause it's lost the page Can't find a word to say But they want you to Oh they want you to Yes they want you too Oh they want you, too Broken plates on dirty highways Pave the way for alien grace There is hardly a method you know
I only consider myself a “gamer” in a literal sense—I play video games every year, but only a modest handful of those already familiar to me, like my darling Bloodborne or Super Smash Bros ...TV On The Radio’s 2006 album Return to CookieMountain.
