Components
The Gamma Velorum system is composed of at least four stars. The brightest member, γ² Velorum or γ Velorum A, is a spectroscopic binary composed of a blue supergiant of spectral class O7.5 (~30M☉), and a massive Wolf-Rayet star (~9M☉, originally ~35M☉). The binary has an orbital period of 78.5 days and separation varying from 0.8 to 1.6 astronomical units. The Wolf-Rayet star is likely to end its life in a Type Ib supernova explosion; it is one of the nearest supernova candidates to the Sun. The Wolf Rayet star has traditionally been regarded as the primary since its emission lines dominate the spectrum, but the O star is visually brighter and also more luminous. For clarity, the components are now often referred to as WR and O.

Gamma Velorum Timelapse (SpaceEngine)
This is a timelapse recorded in Space Engine, a hyper-realistic space exploration simulator. The action here takes place in the Gamma Velorum system, found in the constellation Vela. This system is approximately 1200 light years from Earth. The system is a quadruple star system, meaning it contains 4 stars locked in orbits with each other. The object on the left is Gamma Velorum Aa, a Wolf-Rayet star with a relatively small diameter and mass but extremely high temperature, and power. It is also a supernova candidate, and one of the closest candidates to the Sun. The object on the right is Gamma Velorum Ab, a blue supergiant star with about 30 times the mass of the sun and also very hot, but burning with less intensity than Aa. Paradoxically, Ab is more luminous than Aa, though this ...

The object on the right is Gamma Velorum Ab, a blue supergiant star with about 30 times the mass of the sun and also very hot, but burning with less intensity than Aa. Paradoxically, Ab is more luminous than Aa, though this is explainable due to its greater size and amount of material. The small bright object seen traveling between these two stars is the other binary of the system, another Wolf-Rayet and blue giant pair known as Bb and Ba respectively. In total, these 4 stars equal approximately 55-75 times the mass of the sun, or 18,315,000 - 24,975,000 times the mass of Earth.
The exposure compensation is greatly lowered for this timelapse, allowing you to see the corona of the stars, which consists of extremely hot plasma and gases which are ejected from the star and travel outwards in the form of solar wind. If you pay close attention, you can see the simulation accurately models the difference in strength of the solar winds. The corona of the star on the left consists of straighter lines and any CMEs are less visible as any ejecta are forced out with great velocity. The corona of the star on the right contains more curling forms, which form when CMEs are pulled upon by the gravity of the star they are ejecting from. These features fall in line with what we know about the physical differences of these stars.
The recording runs at 3000x the speed of time, which is just less than an hour per second.
