Recidivism (/rᵻˈsɪdᵻvɪzəm/; from recidive and ism, from Latinrecidīvus "recurring", from re- "back" and cedō "I fall") is the act of a person repeating an undesirable behavior after they had either experienced negative consequences of that behavior, or had been trained to extinguish that behavior. It is also used to refer to the percentage of former prisoners who are rearrested for a similar offense.
The term is frequently used in conjunction with criminal behavior and substance abuse. (Recidivism is a synonym for "relapse", which is more commonly used in medicine and in the disease model of addiction). For example, scientific literature may refer to the recidivism of sexual offenders, meaning the frequency with which they are detected or apprehended committing additional sexual crimes after being released from prison for similar crimes.
To be counted as recidivism, the re-offending requires voluntary disclosure of arrest and conviction, so the real recidivism rate may differ substantially from reported rates. As another example, alcoholic recidivism might refer to the proportion of people who, after successful treatment, report having, or are determined to have, returned to the abuse of alcohol.
In medicine, relapse or recidivism is a recurrence of a past (typically medical) condition. For example, MS or malaria often exhibit peaks of activity and sometimes long periods of dormancy.
In the context of drug use, relapse or reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior, is a form of spontaneous recovery that involves the recurrence of pathological drug use after a period of abstinence. Relapse is often observed in individuals who have developed a drug addiction or either form of drug dependence.
Causes
Substances that may cause addiction or dependence include:
Alcohol produces disinhibition in the nervous system when introduced, and it depresses the frontal cortex while speeding up the rest of the brain. This can lead to decreased ability to perceive and evaluate risks and make good decisions, and other characteristics of what is commonly known as intoxication.
Relapse can leave us feeling discouraged and powerless. Learn why you relapse and what you can do to break the cycle of addiction.

Before Alcoholics Anonymous and other Twelve Step Programs, there was virtually no solution for alcoholism and drug addiction - no matter how hard the medical community tried. With an increase in reliance upon methods like "Relapse Prevention" from the medical community, and an ever-increasing relapse and overdose rate around the world - what if the new solution to the addiction crisis was once again found in the community of those who have suffered in addiction and alcoholism?
Adam Gunton is the Founder of Recovered On Purpose, a nonprofit dedicated to helping those in recovery share their stories powerfully and help addicts recover. Adam Gunton is the bestselling author of “From Chains To Saved,” founder of Recovered On Purpose, and host of The Recovered On Purpose Show. After overcoming homelessness and serious drug addiction in 2017, Adam set out to help as many people overcome similar circumstances as possible. His mission is to equip and empower addicts in recovery. He teaches them to powerfully share their stories with the world and encourage other addicts to find hope through recovery. Recovered on Purpose also doubles as a relapse prevention program by adding incredible purpose, mission and passion to their lives in recovery. It is growing rapidly and the impact this movement is making is beyond anything one person could do alone. His most exciting accomplishments to this point are all the stories his students share and tell him of the addicts who have found recovery through his program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Lyrics:
Maybe we should relapse...relapse
Drink us one or two or three jacks...go back
Baby I ain’t talking rehab
Im talking what we had
When you were mine
Love that look in your eye
I’m undressing in my head my bed
Ain’t nobody on your side yet but I’d wreck
Midnight into morning with you
Ain’t nobody get you like I do
So maybe we should relapse
So maybe we should...
Call each other
Blame it on another it’s late
Girl I wonder
Should we make another mistake
Under covers
I say I’m recovered
But I’d change that in heart break
Just to feel your body
Next to me tonight
That’s the ecstasy I like
Maybe we should relapse...relapse
Drink us one or two or three jacks...go back
Baby I ain’t talking rehab
Im talking what we had

Lyrics:
Maybe we should relapse...relapse
Drink us one or two or three jacks...go back
Baby I ain’t talking rehab
Im talking what we had
When you were mine
Love that look in your eye
I’m undressing in my head my bed
Ain’t nobody on your side yet but I’d wreck
Midnight into morning with you
Ain’t nobody get you like I do
So maybe we should relapse
So maybe we should...
Call each other
Blame it on another it’s late
Girl I wonder
Should we make another mistake
Under covers
I say I’m recovered
But I’d change that in heart break
Just to feel your body
Next to me tonight
That’s the ecstasy I like
Maybe we should relapse...relapse
Drink us one or two or three jacks...go back
Baby I ain’t talking rehab
Im talking what we had
When you were mine
Love that look in your eye
I’m undressing in my head my bed
Ain’t nobody on your side yet but I’d wreck
Midnight into morning with you
Ain’t nobody get you like I do
So maybe we should relapse
So maybe we should relapse
Next to me tonight
That’s the ecstasy I like
Maybe we should relapse...relapse
Drink us one or two or three jacks...go back
Baby I ain’t talking rehab
Im talking what we had
When you were mine
Love that look in your eye
I’m undressing in my head my bed
Ain’t nobody on your side yet but I’d wreck
Midnight into morning with you
Ain’t nobody get you like I do
So maybe we should relapse
