Raymond Chandler Biography - America's Greatest Noir Master
His father, an alcoholic and abusive American civil engineer, abandoned his family and divorced his wife, lived with his maternal uncles, and she took her son to England to receive a solid literary training. Aided by a prosperous Irish Quaker lawyer who was also his mother's uncle, he studied classics and moderns at Dulwich College, London (1900-1905); in a private school where writers such as P. G. Wodehouse and C. S. Forester had also been trained. He then traveled to France and Germany (1905-1907) and became a British citizen in 1907. After a brief job at the Admiralty, which he left because of not sympathizing with military conduct, he worked as a reporter for the London Daily Express and for the Bristol Western Gazette (1908...

Ripley Si Umbrele , Tom Ripley , Partea 2/5 , Carte in format audio , Audiobook

Real L.A. Sleaze and Legend with James Ellroy
James Ellroy joins Walter Kirn on BylinerTV for a conversation where nothing is restrained and the boundaries of polite conversation are obliterated.
Ellroy testifies to the vile and glorious corners of LA, and shares his visions of history without refracting the present day. From his roots in writing, crime, fame fascination and current events, it's an interview that could be measured on the richter scale.
GUEST BIO:
A master of noir crime fiction, James Ellroy has up close and personal knowledge of the world of crime. His life has been shadowed by a gruesome event: the unsolved murder of his mother when he was a child. In 1958, Gene...

How the Pinkerton Agency Laid the Foundation for the FBI and CIA
If you're interested in knowing about the origins of government agencies like the FBI, the Secret Service, and the CIA, look no further than Pinkerton Agency history. It may seem like the vestige of a bygone era, but it's still around.
The Pinkerton National Detective Agency, founded by Allan Pinkerton, established itself as a surveillance and intelligence body during the second half of the 19th century. The agency created the foundation for the "alphabet soup" of US security existing today.

After a brief job at the Admiralty, which he left because of not sympathizing with military conduct, he worked as a reporter for the London Daily Express and for the Bristol Western Gazette (1908-12). He published 27 poems and his first account of his The Rose Leaf Romance before returning to the United States in 1912 with money borrowed from his uncle. He visited his mother and his other uncles and settled in San Francisco, where he learned bookkeeping by correspondence, and then in Los Angeles with his mother in 1913. He participated in World War I as a soldier for the Gordon Highlanders of Canada in the trenches from the French front and was training as an RAF war pilot when the war ended and returned to California, where he would live for the rest of his life, working as a bank clerk. When his mother died in 1924, he married Pearl Cecily Bowen (Cissy Pascal), eighteen years older than him, a woman with whom he had already established relationships -not approved by his mother-, when he was married, and once divorced and Once the marriage was celebrated, it lasted almost thirty years, until her death in 1954, although she had no children. In 1932, Chandler had managed to be appointed vice president of the Dabney Oil Syndicate in Signal Hill, California, but he lost this lucrative job because of his alcoholism, his absenteeism and his numerous adventures with the secretaries. In 1933, at age 45 and in the midst of the Great Depression, he devoted himself entirely to writing for pulps, popular crime fiction magazines printed on cheap paper.
His prose is not lacking in aesthetic qualities: his style surpasses Hammet's impressionism and is characteristically ironic and frequent in traits of caustic wit, especially in dialogue. Thanks to him, the crime novel gained a hitherto unknown literary dignity. His first story was Blackmailers Don't Shoot, for Black Mask magazine, a pulp dedicated to action stories; since then he has not abandoned the genre.
Chandler acknowledges that he began to write by imitating Dashiell Hammett, 1 but his style is very different: Hammett is dry and impressionistic, and Chandler is ironic and cynical. Between 1933 and 1939, he produced 19 stories, in which he began to define his own style and where his characters began to display some of the traits that would later define Marlowe: wit, sharpness, idealism, and honesty.
From Hammett he takes the denunciation of the American society of the time, where money and the search for power are the true engines of human relationships, with their consequent consequences of crime, marginalization and injustice. He reflected on the art of the detective novel in his essay The Simple Art of Killing (1950).
At the age of 51, his first novel appears, The Eternal Dream (1939), where Marlowe appears for the first time. The detective moves through the underworld of the city of Los Angeles, in principle to avoid the heart attack of a millionaire, rescuing his youngest daughter from blackmail; However, his best novel is considered to be El largo adiós (1953), a work in which he reflects on loyalty, friendship and love in the context of various crimes in California high society. In 1943 he was asked to work in Hollywood adapting the script for Double Indemnity (Perdition), about the novel by James Cain, directed by Billy Wilder. After the death of his wife in 1954, the writer suffered severe depression, increased his alcoholism and attempted suicide twice.
The Noir In Festival, held every December in the Italian municipality of Courmayeur, has awarded a Raymond Chandler crime novel award since 1991 in his honor.

With all the confidence of a shotgun blast, he tears through the politically correct limits on discussion and breathes fire with each admission and opinion.
In 1958, Geneva Hilliker Ellroy's body was dumped on a roadway in El Monte, California, a seedy L.A. exurb. Her killer was never apprehended. Her murder unleashed a force that has propelled Ellroy's work. Ellroy channeled his anguish and transformed himself into an outsized public persona: an audacious, uncompromising, and unapologetic chronicler of humanity's dark side.
James Ellroy is masterly at speaking, his own backstory as riveting as any in fiction. Ellroy was born in 1948. He consumed crime novels as a young reader and developed an obsessive fascination with homicide after his father bought him Jack Webb's The Badge. In the book he discovered the story of the ghastly murder and mutilation of Elizabeth Short, known after her death as the Black Dahlia, whose murder and the subsequent investigation captivated the postwar imagination of the entire country.
As a young man haunted by his mother's death, Ellroy became a thief, an alcoholic, a drug abuser, and a peeping Tom. He served time in jail. Much of the first thirty years of his life was consumed by homelessness, alcoholism, drug abuse, petty crime, and a period of insanity. Ellroy eventually found steady work caddying at Los Angeles country clubs and joined AA. As he walked the golf courses while he worked, he harnessed his narrative passion to his fascination with crime and began to daydream a novel. In 1985 he began The Black Dahlia, an explicit attempt to marry his mother's murder to the famous case that had so obsessed him in his youth. The novel appeared in 1987 and was dedicated to his mother.
As a novelist, screenwriter, essayist, and memoirist, James Ellroy is more closely identified with Los Angeles than any writer since Raymond Chandler. Nearly all of his writing is set in Los Angeles, in the rough, racist, pre-Miranda Los Angeles of the decade following the Second World War. Four of his novels --- The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential (an Academy Award winning-movie), and White Jazz --- are collectively known as the L.A. Quartet. They comprise a dark and obsessive 1950s anti-history of his hometown. His novels American Tabloid, The Cold Six Thousand, and Blood's A Rover (September 2009) form the Underworld U.S.A. Trilogy, and American Tabloid and his memoir, My Dark Places, were both named as Time magazine's Best Book of the Year, respectively.
Curtis Hanson directed the blockbuster film adaptation of L.A. Confidential (1997) in which (as in the book), everything is suspect, everyone is for sale, and nothing is what it seems. The Black Dahlia, directed by Brian De Palma, was released in 2006. Ellroy himself has been the subject of seven documentary films, including Feast of Death, by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Vikram Jayanti.

A Wisconsin man stands trial for allegedly murdering and dismembering his parents without remorse, and providing false information on their disappearances. Chandler Michael Halderson, 23, faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide. Remains from his father Bart Halderson, 50, and mother Krista Halderson, 53, were found days apart, authorities said.
Defendant Halderson reported his parents missing July 7th, claiming they left their home in the Village of Windsor days before on the 1st. He told WISC-TV at the time that they were going to the village of White Lake, Wisconsin.
“My last message I got from them, they were going to White Lake for the Fourth of July,” he told “There are some festivities that go around there. Better drink prices at the bars. Stuff like that.”
He said that to his knowledge, they were then going to their cabin in Langlade County.
“Along the way, they could’ve stopped many places,” he said. “I wouldn’t know all of them.”
He was allegedly just feeding everyone lies.
Bart’s torso was found in rural Dane County, while remains from Krista were found in Sauk County and property run by the Department of Natural Resources, according to court documents obtained by The Wisconsin State Journal.
Their son had been searching Google for terms like “Body found Wisconsin,” “Woman’s body found in Wisconsin,” “Wisconsin dismembered body found,” and “Dead body found in Wisconsin,” authorities said. Investigators suggested Chandler Halderson used to a visit to property belonging to the partner of his girlfriend’s mother as cover to hide his father’s torso nearby. He had shot Bart Halderson at least once before dismembering him, officials said.
According to investigators, Halderson said after his arrest that “you don’t know the whole story,” and that he “didn’t feel bad about what I did.”

Raymond Chandler: Character is All
This video explores how Raymond Chandler focuses on the depiction of his characters to drive the plot of The Long Goodbye. Famously deriding the idea of the detective novel as a 'puzzle' to be 'solved', Chandler presents a study of American society in which people who apparently have everything - fame, riches, beauty - can still ruin it all. For Chandler, the outlines of their character is what brings about this downfall. His hero, Philip Marlowe recognises this, and it makes him angry, but in the end there is nothing he can do to save people from themselves.

The soundtrack is not in sync with the picture slightly in the beginning.
Detective Philip Marlowe [Robert Mitchum] trying to solve a murder he has stumbled on, involved with the California Gambling scene and three potentially dangerous women...
Farewell, My Lovely is a 1975 American neo noir film, directed by Dick Richards and featuring Robert Mitchum as private detective Phillip Marlowe.
The picture is based on Raymond Chandler's novel of the same name (1940), which had previously been adapted for film as Murder, My Sweet in 1944.
The film also stars Charlotte Rampling, John Ireland, Jack O'Halloran, Sylvia Miles and Harry Dean Stanton, with an early screen appearance by Sylvester Stallone. Mitchum returned to the role of Marlowe three years later in a 1978 remake of The Big Sleep, making him the only actor to portray Philip Marlowe more than once on the big screen.
PLOT
Set in Los Angeles in 1941, against a seamy backdrop of police corruption, cheap hotel rooms, illegal gambling and jewel trafficking, private detective Philip Marlowe is holed up in a hotel room and growing more weary by the hour. As he explains to his police lieutenant friend Nulty: "I've got a hat, a coat and a gun, that's it."
Marlowe has been hired by a huge and surly ex-convict, Moose Malloy, to find his old girlfriend Velma, whom he hasn't seen in seven years. At the same time, Marlowe is investigating the murder of a client named Marriott who was a victim of blackmail and a stolen necklace made of jade.
While encountering connections to both cases, Marlowe develops an attraction to the married and seductive Helen Grayle. As the body count mounts, Marlowe survives attempts on his life, which include being drugged and held captive by a psychotic brothel madam named Amthor and her thugs. The action comes to a head with a shootout on a gambling boat off the L.A. coast.
Robert Mitchum as Philip Marlowe: Cynical Private Eye/Protagonist
Charlotte Rampling as Helen Grayle: Seductive Temptress Femme Fatale
John Ireland as Lt. Nulty: Skeptical LAPD Detective
Sylvia Miles as Jessie Halstead Florian: Retired Showgirl/"Secret" Drinker
Anthony Zerbe as Laird Brunette: Big Time Gangster/Gambling Operator
Harry Dean Stanton as Detective Billy Rolfe: Corrupt LAPD Detective
Jack O'Halloran as Moose Malloy: Huge Ex-Convict
Joe Spinell as Nick: Hired Muscle
Sylvester Stallone as Jonnie: Hired Muscle
Kate Murtagh as Frances Amthor: L.A.'s infamous Madam/Drug Peddler (Believed to be based on Brenda Allen)
John O'Leary as Lindsay Marriott: "Homosexual" Blackmailer/Finger man for Jewel Mob
Walter McGinn as Tommy Ray: Second Rate Jazz Trumpeter
Jim Thompson as Judge Baxter Wilson Grayle: Corrupt Law Official/Helen's "sick" husband

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marlowe (Elliott Gould) is interrogated by Detective Farmer (Stephen Coit) regarding the disappearance of Terry Lennox.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"It's OK with me...." Applying his deconstructive eye to the "film noir" tradition, Robert Altman updated Raymond Chandler in his 1973 version of Chandler's novel, The Long Goodbye. Smart-aleck, cat-loving private eye Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) is certain that his friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton) isn't a wife-killer, even after the cops throw Marlowe in jail for not cooperating with their investigation into Lennox's subsequent disappearance. Once he gets out of jail, Marlowe starts to conduct his own search when he discovers that mysterious blonde Eileen Wade (Nina Van Pallandt), who hired him to find her alcoholic novelist husband Roger (Sterling Hayden), lives on the same Malibu street as the absent Lennox and his deceased spouse. As numerous variations on the title song play in unexpected places, Marlowe encounters a shady doctor (Henry Gibson), a bottle-wielding gangster (director Mark Rydell), and a guard aping Barbara Stanwyck (among other stars), before heading to Mexico to stumble onto the truth once and for all.
