Rangitoto Island is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand. The 5.5km wide island is an iconic and widely visible landmark of Auckland with its distinctive symmetrical shield volcano cone rising 260 metres (850ft) high over the Hauraki Gulf. Rangitoto is the most recent and the largest (2311 hectares) of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field. It is separated from the mainland of Auckland's North Shore by the Rangitoto Channel. Since World War II it has been linked by a causeway to the much older, non-volcanic Motutapu Island.
Rangitoto is Māori for 'Bloody Sky', with the name coming from the full phrase Ngā Rangi-i-totongia-a Tama-te-kapua ('The days of the bleeding of Tama-te-kapua'). Tama-te-kapua was the captain of the Arawawaka (canoe) and was badly wounded on the island, at a (lost) battle with the Tainuiiwi (tribe) at Islington Bay.
Geology
Rangitoto was formed by a series of eruptions commencing at least 6000 years ago, with the most recent eruptions occurring between 550 and 600 years ago. The most recent eruptions occurred in two episodes, 10–50 yrs apart, and are thought to have lasted for several years during the later shield-forming episode. The first recent episode erupted most of the volcanic ash that mantles Motutapu Island next door, and produced the lower, northern, scoria cone. The second episode built most of Rangitoto erupting all the lava flows and main scoria cone at the apex. The 2.3 cubic kilometres of material that erupted from the volcano was about equal to the combined mass produced by all the previous eruptions in the Auckland volcanic field, which were spread over more than 250,000 years.

Climbing Auckland's largest volcano RANGITOTO ISLAND and visiting Commercial Bay | NEW ZEALAND
Rangitoto Island is Auckland's largest and youngest volcano. It's an iconic landmark of Auckland, New Zealand. It's even part of our logo! We got the rice bit to represent Rangitoto since we grew up in Auckland :)
We took a Fuller's ferry to head out to Rangitoto Island from Auckland's downtown ferry terminal. We decided to do the summit trek which takes roughly an hour to get to the top and an hour to get back. If you book your tickets online like we did, it saves the hassle of queuing up to get it at the ferry building plus you save a couple of bucks too.

During Auckland's Level 2.5 it's compulsory to wear face masks while on any public transport and that includes ferry rides. If you like the look of our face masks which are washable and reusable, we bought them from our mate's online store Charlie's Laundry. They're Kiwi-made, all hand sewn and there's a bunch of different designs available too.

After our Rangitoto summit trek, we got back to Auckland CBD and went to check out Commercial Bay. Commercial Bay is Auckland's newest retail and hospitality precinct right in the heart of downtown Auckland. It officially opened just after the first lockdown here only a few months ago.

Just make sure to follow the guidelines since Rangitoto is a pest-free island and also be conscious of the time so you don't miss your ferry back!

4k Drone Footage of Rangitoto Island.
Rangitoto Island sits in the Hauraki Gulf just off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand. It's home to an extinct volcano. There are more than 70 in the Auckland area and can all be seen from the Sky Tower in the CBD, which you can just about see in he background.
You can get a ferry to the island and hike around the creator rim in a couple of hours, or hike around the whole in island in a day. The cooled lava fields still scatter the island and have roads carved through them.
