Brown was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft. He played four seasons in Sacramento, scoring 1,349 points, but he would become best known for his tenure with the Chicago Bulls.
Brown signed with the Bulls in 1995, and he provided valuable energy and aggressiveness off the bench during the Bulls' second "three-peat" (1996–1998). A fan favorite, Brown was also one of the few veteran players who stayed with the Bulls after the 1998-99lockout. With the absence of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman, he became a full-time starter and averaged 8.8 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.4 rebounds (all career highs) during the remainder of the 1998-99 season. After one more season in Chicago, Brown played briefly for the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns, and he retired from the NBA in 2003 with 3,148 career points and 1,420 career assists.
Brown became a solo singer after recording with Memphis group, The Newcomers, who had the R&B hit "Pin The Tail On The Donkey" in 1971, on Stax Records. After several unsuccessful singles on Stax subsidiary label, Truth in 1974, he was persuaded to return to the studio by writer/producer Carl Hampton in 1978. Hampton produced and wrote all of the material on Brown's debut album with Homer Banks, another long-time Memphis producer/musician. Brown recorded four albums for Casablanca Records' subsidiaries, Parachute and Chocolate City, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, often performing songs penned and produced by [Homer Banks]], now working with writer/guitarist, Chuck Brooks. At one point, Brown was also a short-term member of The Temprees.
Brown's brother was William Brown, who was a member of The Mad Lads group and also a studio recording engineer, especially at Stax Records. He produced several tracks for his brother on Truth, which were later released in 1981 on an album on the re-activated Stax Records, following the takeover by Fantasy Records.

"We were able to finish the ball right away and get the goals going in. That's what we needed to do,"
"It was just a bunch of guys being able to play defense, ... and Alex is playing superb."
"To get a goal like that gave us a lot of confidence, and that's something you need against a team like Maranatha."
"I'm just glad we were able to play. It looked like it was going to be delayed until Wednesday. But I don't think it affected either team."
"They were the state champs last year -- not this year. We knew it would be a good game. They came in here hoping to surprise us, but both teams played exceptionally well and, fortunately, we came away with a win."
"It's better that we have this break, ... so I'm glad we were able to beat out the storm."
"It keeps us on our toes,"
"My 15-year-old could have found it for them,"
"We just relaxed and had a good game,"
"It was a good game to make sure we could do some different things if we need to down the road."
