Pride 2021: Why is the gay rainbow flag being updated? - BBC My World #shorts
The rainbow flag - also known sometimes known as the gay pride or LGBT+ flag - has been updated to mark Pride Month. The new ‘Intersex-inclusive’ flag continues the tradition of the Pride flag being updated. But what is the history of the flag and what do the colours mean? BBC LGBT correspondent Ben Hunte explains.
The original pride flag was created by Gilbert Baker and introduced in 1978. In 2017, Amber Hikes for the City of Philadelphia introduced a version with black and brown stripes added - to represent communities of colour.
A year later Daniel Quasar redesigned the flag to also include the transgender community, creating the ‘Pride progress flag’. This design incorporates the trans flag which was originally created by Monica Helms - blue and pink are colours historically associa...

How the Rainbow Flag Became a Symbol of LGBTQ Pride
In late ‘70s San Francisco, the nascent Gay Rights Movement was in full swing. Without a symbol to rally around, the diverse group of activists navigated the treacherous political climate with no beacon. That’s where artist Gilbert Baker came in. Baker’s iconic rainbow flag design not only filled a void, it quickly became a global symbol of LGBTQ unity and solidarity.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

Do you know what the colors of the Progress Pride flag represent?
The flag was developed in 2018 by non-binary American artist and designer Daniel Quasar (who uses xe/xyr pronouns). It was based on the iconic rainbow flag created by activist, artist and educator Gilbert Baker in 1978, with the redesign celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ community and calling for a more inclusive society.
"The arrow points to the right to show forward movement […] and illustrates that progress [towards inclusivity] still needs to be made." Daniel Quasar
The fight for inclusivity needs to come from both within and outside the LGBTQ community – from all spheres of society. LOVE IS LOVE!

This design incorporates the trans flag which was originally created by Monica Helms - blue and pink are colours historically associated with baby boys and girls, while the middle stripe is for those who are transitioning. Now, the ‘Intersex-inclusive pride flag’ has been introduced by Valentino Vecchietti of Intersex Equality Rights UK.
Morgan Carpenter created the intersex flag in 2013 - a circle represents wholeness and the fight for intersex people to be who they want to be. There are many Pride flags - from asexual to straight ally - and this new version continues the tradition of the LGBT flag being updated to be more inclusive.
June marks Pride month – When LGBT communities and allies come together and celebrate the progress that has been made towards equal rights.

The flag was developed in 2018 by non-binary American artist and designer Daniel Quasar (who uses xe/xyr pronouns).
