The rail profile is the cross sectional shape of a railway rail, perpendicular to the length of the rail.
Early rails were made of wood, cast iron or wrought iron. All modern rails are hot rolledsteel of a specific cross sectional profile. Typically the cross section (profile) approximates an I-beam but is asymmetric about a horizontal axis (however see grooved rail below). The head is profiled to resist wear and to give a good ride, the foot is profiled to suit the fixing system.
Unlike some other uses of iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very high stresses and are made of very high quality steel. It took many decades to improve the quality of the materials, including the change from iron to steel. Minor flaws in the steel that may pose no problems in other applications can lead to broken rails and dangerous derailments when used on railway tracks.
By and large, the heavier the rails and the rest of the trackwork, the heavier and faster the trains these tracks can carry.
Manufacture methods
- Blooms made from basic oxygen steel or electric arc furnace steel that has been secondary ladle arc refined, vacuum degassed and continuously cast, shall be used for the manufacture of rails.
- Continuous casting blooms shall be used for the manufacture of rails.
- The manufacturer shall operate a procedure for the effective removal of scale during the rolling process.
- The cross-sectional area of the rail shall not exceed one ninth that of the bloom from which the rail is rolled.
- Rail straightening shall be by a two stage roller straightening process which straightens the rail about its XX and YY axes as defined in the rail profiles shown. End deviations or a localized deviation on the rail may be corrected using pressing.
- A precise and easy-to-use battery-powered rail profile grinder.
- Optimized work cycles thanks to its powerful Activion electric motor.
- Ergonomic turning around system allowing the grinder to be used by one single operator without being lifted.
- Powered by the unique and high-performance Activion battery.
- Activion technology ensures reduced noise emissions, eliminates polluting gases and facilitates maintenance.

RPCS (Rail Profile Contact Scanner) provides the rail profile’s accurate, reliable, and easy measurement. The benefits of RPCS devices lie in its stable design, lightweight, and simple and quick operability. The double measuring bar provides the opportunity to measure rail profiles with extreme wear, and it is suitable for most rail types, for example Phoenix and Vignol rails as well. The RPCS devices can be connected via Bluetooth, to a hand-held computer to record, evaluate, and save the reading/ measured data.
RPCS measures the rail head profiles with transverse technique. Courtesy its magnetic base and support bar, RPCS can be easily positioned on the rail’s running surface. It is an extremely useful device to check the rail’s quality at delivery, and also while performing the periodic rail wear checking to plan maintenance. It allows the measurement of the eliminated material, and rail profile during grinding activity.
RPCS Wheel is an exclusively designed measuring device that allows measuring cross profile, and the wheel’s radius with a measurement positioning frame. RPCS wheels have the ability to measure the wheel flange’s angle, gradient, outer radius, wear (inner and outer), width and height. It also can measure the profile wear, diameter, angle and gradient of the running surface.
