RAF Fylingdales is a Royal Air Force station on Snod Hill in the North York Moors, England. Its motto is "Vigilamus" (translates to "We are watching"). It is a radarbase and is also part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS). As part of intelligence-sharing arrangements between the United States and United Kingdom (see, for example, the UKUSA Agreement), data collected at RAF Fylingdales are shared between the two countries. Its primary purpose is to give the British and US governments warning of an impending ballistic missile attack (part of the so-called four minute warning during the Cold War). A secondary role is the detection and tracking of orbiting objects.
According to the 2011 UK census, Fylingdales parish had a population of 1,346, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 1,485.
History
Fylingdales was recorded as Figclinge in the 11th century, Figelinge and Fielinge in the 11th and 12th centuries and possibly as Saxeby in the 12th century. It was a parochial chapelry south of Whitby and contained the villages of Robin Hood's Bay and Thorpe, or Fylingthorpe (which was recorded as Prestethorpe in the 13th century) and the hamlets of Normanby, Parkgate, Ramsdale, Raw (Fyling Rawe, 16th century) and Stoupe Brow. The church, dedicated to St Stephen replaced an ancient chapel which had Saxon origins and was demolished in about 1821 and was a dependent chapel of Whitby Abbey.
Fyling Old Hall is in Fylingthorpe not far from the Fyling Beck and was leased by the abbey in 1539. It is built in sandstone with a slate roof and mullioned windows. Sir Hugh Cholmley sold Fyling Hall in 1634 to Sir John Hotham whose descendants held the estate including the hall and mill until the 18th century.

RAF Fylingdales is a radar base that's a crucial link in the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. But now the North Yorkshire base is giving up some of its old secrets. Researchers are being allowed on the site to sift through Cold War documents, photos and even examine control consoles, once on the frontline of Britain's defence.

The RAF's ballistic missile early warning radar in Yorkshire has celebrated its 30th birthday as it closely watches threats from the Ukraine war.
RAF Fylingdales says that in the past six weeks alone, it has detected more ballistic weapons than in the entire previous year.
The station has been monitoring the Ukraine crisis since Russia launched its attack and invaded on 24 February.

Every day at Fylingdales, the Early Warning Missile Base high on the North York Moors near Whitby in North Yorkshire, 5000 space objects come under the day-and-night questioning of 100-ton radar scanners. The basic function of Fylingdales is to alert the West to possible Russian nuclear ballistic attack.
