Moi Air Base, formerly known as RAF Eastleigh and Eastleigh Airport(ICAO: HKRE) is a military airport located to the east of Nairobi, in the Eastleigh suburb. The airport is used by the Kenya Air Force. Additionally, the airfield is the home of the East African School of Aviation run by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, which was established at the airport in 1954 as the DCA training school. The airport is also used to train Kenyan Air Cadets.
Due to its military status, the airport is not shown in any official map of Nairobi. Instead, the area is left blank. This does not affect Google Earth, though.
History
Royal Air Force use
RAF Eastleigh was a Royal Air Force airfield in Kenya, in the Eastleigh suburb of Nairobi. The name "RAF Eastleigh" was also used during 1935 for the airfield in England that became RAF Southampton in 1936.
Eastleigh was the primary RAF station for East Africa, and home to Air Headquarters East Africa after force reductions in the 1950s. However, because of its high elevation and short runways (which could not be extended because of its location close to the city), from the arrival of No. 208 Squadron RAF in the late 1950s with its Hawker Hunters, jet fighters and bombers had to operate out of nearby Embakasi Airport. Eastleigh also operated as a civilian airport with airlines such as BOAC, EAA, etc operating flights until the opening of Embakasi Airport (now Jomo Kenyatta International) nearby in 1958.
The modern town of Eastleigh lies on the old Roman road, built in A.D.79 between Winchester(Venta Belgarum) and Bitterne(Clausentum).Roman remains discovered in the Eastleigh area, including a Roman leadcoffin excavated in 1908, indicate that a settlement probably existed here in Roman times.
A Saxon village called ‘East Leah’ has been recorded to have existed since 932 AD. (‘Leah’ is an ancient Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘a clearing in a forest’). There is additional evidence of this settlement in a survey from the time which details land in North Stoneham being granted by King Æthelstan to his military aid, Alfred in 932 AD. The prefix 'Est' or 'East' is thought to refer to its location relative to the established settlement of Baddesley.
1955-1974: The Municipal Borough of Eastleigh, in the Rural District of New Forest the civil parishes of Eling and Netley Marsh, in the Rural District of Romsey and Stockbridge the civil parishes of Ampfield, Chilworth, North Baddesley, and Nursling and Rownhams, and in the Rural District of Winchester the civil parishes of Botley, Bursledon, Hamble, Hedge End, Hound, and West End.
1974-1983: The Municipal Boroughs of Eastleigh and Romsey, in the Rural District of Romsey and Stockbridge the civil parishes of Ampfield, Braishfield, Chilworth, Melchet Park and Plaitford, Michelmersh, North Baddesley, Nursling and Rownhams, Romsey Extra, Sherfield English, and Wellow, and in the Rural District of Winchester the civil parishes of Botley, Bursledon, Hamble, Hedge End, Hound, and West End.
Sigh of relief in Eastleigh as restrictions are lifted
It's been exactly one month of business unusual in Eastleigh and old town in Mombasa after the government imposed cessation of movement orders in and out of the two areas to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the partial lockdown in the two areas, they roared back to life with residents expressing joy. However the situation was different in kilifi and kwale as residents said they have no reason to smile until the restrictions on Mombasa are lifted.
