GREENLAND TSUNAMI: Fishermen Run For Their Lives - Camera 3
Shocking moment caught on camera when fishermen got surprised by the incredible power of a tsunami wave which hit Greenland's west coast. Luckily all three were able to escape the wave just in time. Subscribe for more crazy videos ► https://www.youtube.com/c/LicetStudios?sub_confirmation=1
In the evening of June 17th, 2017 (at about 9:40 pm local time), a gigantic landslide (measuring 300 m × 1,100 m = 980 ft × 3,610 ft) occurred on the southern slope of the Umiammakku Nunaat peninsula. Several dozen million cubic meters of rock and slope sediments fell about 1 km (3,300 ft) into the Kangilleq fjord, which triggered a tsunami that moved westward into the Karrat fjord complex. The tsunami wave, which was initially over 90 meters high (about 300 ft.), reached the small village Nuugaatsiaq ...

Greenland is a spectacle to behold! It's almost entirely covered in ice, yet there are some "green" areas. Still, the largest island in the world is home to only about 56,000 people making it one of the least densely populated regions of the world. So why do so few people live in Greenland? And why is it called "Green" if it's actually filled with so much ice?

Greenland - Since 8 years I'm traveling to this magical country. Today quiet and untouched places are becoming more and more rare. On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.
Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 70 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Fjords, glaciers and the highest mountains in the Arctic: East Greenland with its spectacular nature is one of the most sparsely populated regions on earth. The people here live in extreme isolation and depend on helicopter flights for their supplies. Despite harsh conditions, the inhabitants here lovingly maintain their traditions and enjoy their outdoor leisure time even at minus 20 degrees Celsius.
The town of Tasiilaq is the "metropolis" with 4,000 inhabitants and offers a very special attraction: the only ski lift on the east coast. Thomas Mikaelsen, the lift attendant, is not to be envied for his job. The only 100 meter long lift comes from Switzerland and is already 20 years old. If Thomas gets the drag lift running at all, it often only lasts for an hour. Then the ski crazy's luck depends on his repair skills. The lift is the only frosty open-air pleasure.
For Salo Kunuk his sled dogs are both pleasure and work. He is currently teaching his daughter Karla how to steer a dog sled, private driving lessons from her father, so to speak. Karla will need it, because in the eternal ice the sled is the only means of transportation.
Tobias Ignatiussen owns a motorized sled version with 100 HP. He goes, like already his ancestors, on seal hunt. Only with the help of the snowmobile he can reach ice-free places in the fjord. Despite strict hunting restrictions, the Inuit still depend on seal meat and fur to survive.
A tradition almost as important as hunting is the tupilak, small figures from Greenlandic mythology, made from whale teeth or reindeer antlers. Gideon Quqe made it to the master as a carver, and some of his tupilaks look quite spooky. Because from his ancestors, Gideon knows that the tupilak was intended by its owner to be used as an evil spirit to harm the enemy. Nowadays Gideon also carves nice looking figures, because lucky charms simply sell better.
At the Klubben, Tasiilaq's only pub, the concert of the year is on: the local combo Dubbi Band, named after the nickname of band leader Tobias Sanimuinaq, performs. They call their wild musical style "Greenland Swing". Even in the middle of the white wilderness you can make your audience dance.

The tsunami wave, which was initially over 90 meters high (about 300 ft.), reached the small village Nuugaatsiaq with a wave height of about ten meters (about 30 ft.). It took the catastrophic wave only seven minutes to cover the 32 kilometers distance to Nuugaatsiaq, which means it reached an average speed of 275 km/h. The tsunami dragged four people out to sea, who have since been considered dead. Furthermore, seven people were slightly injured and two people were seriously injured by the catastrophic natural disaster. Eleven buildings were destroyed. Rescue helicopters brought the approximately 200 local residents to the district capital of Uummannaq.
In 2018, a Swiss company observed the situation and found that the mountain slipped about 1 cm every day and one could expect another landslide at any time. The risk for this was rated at 11.5 out of 12, which is why a resettlement at this time was further excluded. Shortly thereafter it was announced that there was still danger from the mountain slope, making it impossible to end the evacuation. The village of Nuugaatsiaq has since been abandoned.
Was the Greenland tsunami a "mega-tsunami"? The Greenland tsunami may be considered as mega-tsunami (or impact tsunami) due to its incredible initial wave height of nearly 100 m / + 300 ft. By contrast to ordinary tsunamis, which usually reach an hight of about 30-100 ft., a megatsunami is a tsunami with an initial wave amplitude measured in several tens, hundreds, or possibly thousands of metres. Megatsunamis are caused by giant landslides and other impact events (including meteorite impacts in an ocean), while ordinary tsunamis are usually caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions (which do not normally generate such large waves). Other recent megatsunamis include the wave associated with the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa (volcanic eruption), the 1958 Lituya Bay megatsunami (landslide into a bay), and the wave resulting from the Vajont Dam landslide (caused by human activity) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megatsunami).
When comparing this "Greenland Tsunami" with the 1958 "Lituya Bay Mega-tsunami", it seems surprising that the landslide which triggered the Greenland Tsunami was actually even bigger than the landslide which triggered the 1958 Lituya Bay mega-tsunami (45 million m³ which fell about 1 km into the Kangilleq fjord // vs. // 30 million m³ which fell from an elevation of about 900 m into the Lituya Bay). Somehow the Lituya Bay wave ended up being way higher in its max. (+524 m Vs. 100 m). The Greenland Tsunami wave was way faster – it only took 7 minutes to cover the 32 km distance to Nuugaatsiaq (which equals and average speed of about 275 km/h) compared with the speed of the Lituya Bay wave (estimated to only 160-210 hm/h).
Additional information and insights about the causes and the consequences of this Greenland Mega-Tsunami can be found here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321539366_Karrat_Fjord_Greenland_tsunamigenic_landslide_of_17_June_2017_initial_3D_observations and https://www.highnorthnews.com/en/major-donation-greenlands-displaced-tsunami-victims and here https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/65674nunavut_to_donate_25000_for_greenland_tsunami_relief_effort_taptuna/

so Greenland is important because due to global warming Greenland's ice is melting and this would make it a lot more Habitable for humans
secondly Greenland is located on this shipping route called the northwest passage which is very important

What's Under Antarctica's Ice Sheets?
Many of us know Antarctica as a land of ice and not much else. But hidden beneath the miles of glaciers and ice sheets lies a landmass that was last exposed 40 million years ago.
What does this land look like, and what could we expect to find if we are still around to see what's under Antarctica's ice sheets.
I forgot to mention that under the Antarctic treaty, mining is TECHNICALLY prohibited on Antarctic, but that expires in around 30 years, and it's uncertain whether or not it will be renewed. Plus this is all theoretical anyway and would take place over many hundreds of years, if not thousands.

Greenland (disambiguation).
Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat, pronounced [kalaːɬit nunaːt]; Danish: Grønland, pronounced [ˈkʁɶnˌlænˀ]) is the world's largest island,[d] located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is an autonomous territory[11] within the Kingdom of Denmark. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium.[12] The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through Northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century.[13]

USAF F-35's Deployed to Greenland in response to Russian and China
1st Time In History, US Deploys F-35 Fighters To Greenland Where Russia & China Are Boosting Military Presence.
First time in history, the United States Air Force (USAF) deployed its fifth-generation F-35 fighter jet to Greenland, its northernmost military installation in the world.
The US F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jets were deployed to its northernmost military base, at Thule in Greenland.
These formidable stealth fighters took part in a two-week North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) exercise that concluded on January 31.
It may be worth highlighting that the Thule Air Base, located just 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, plays a more significant strategic role against countries like Russia and China.
US officials have warned in recent years that both countries...

Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium.[12] The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from
Alaska through Northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century.[13]

US officials have warned in recent years that both countries are steadily expanding their regional presence and pose a tremendous military risk to the West.
The USAF appears to have envisioned a bigger and more expansive role for the F-35 fighter jets, especially in the north.
In spring 2022, the Eielson Air Force Base in
Alaska completed the standing up of two F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft squadrons. The AFB now has 54 F-35 fighter jets.
As for the Thule Air Base in Greenland, it was believed to have four F-35 fighter jets when the NORAD exercises commenced last month. One of these jets reportedly sported the insignia of the 356th Fighter Squadron, indicating that they had been diverted from the Eielson AFB, which is explicable owing to their proximity.
About 225 US and Canadian soldiers participated in Operation Noble Defender 23-2.1, a NORAD joint exercise that includes the Royal Canadian Air Force, or RCAF, in various sites along the coasts of Canada and the United States. Besides the F-35A stealth fighters, photographs show the participation of CF-18 Hornets of the RCAF.
According to the US Department of Defense (DoD), the exercise was “a series of long-planned NORAD operations validating the command’s capability and readiness to defend the United States and Canada against threats from every avenue of approach, in any environment, and demonstrate the ability to integrate with other defense and security partners for a holistic defense of North America.”
Even though the NORAD exercises are routine for the air forces of the United States and Canada, the presence of American F-35 fighters at Thule is significant. The relevance of this strategic base lies in its history. The Thule AFB was secretly constructed during the Cold War as an outpost to launch possible nuclear strikes against the Soviet Union.
The base eventually lost its strategic importance after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, and the US shifted its attention to Alaska. However, a radar station close to the Thule base has continued to provide early warning of ballistic missile launches that could potentially threaten North America.
With Russia’s continued military expansion in the region and China’s consistent efforts at expanding its presence, Thule could see a resurrection owing to its geographical proximity to the Arctic. The presence of F-35s is likely just one step in that direction.
It may also be pertinent to note that US allies in the region, Canada and Denmark (responsible for Greenland), have chosen to purchase F-35A fighter jets for their future fleets, and they want to deploy these aircraft to places in the Far North temporarily. This means that the F-35s will dominate the region in the future.
US Is Resisting Russia & China In The Pacific
Last month, a batch of satellite photographs obtained by CNN revealed that Russia had been consistently expanding its military bases in the Arctic region despite suffering setbacks on the battlefield and a substantial dent in its military and financial resources. Over the past decade, climate change and melting glaciers have opened newer avenues and exploration of the region’s resources.
This, in turn, has turned the Arctic into a new zone of geopolitical competition, with the West accusing Russia of militarizing the region and Russia accusing the West of threatening its position in the Arctic.
Late last year, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said there is now “a significant Russian military build-up in the high north,” with recent tensions causing the alliance to “double its presence” in response.
Russia has allegedly reactivated several Soviet-era air bases in the Arctic and constructed new ones. It has several ports and airfields in the region that could jeopardize the US’ positions and operations in case of a conflict.
Consequently, the West has increased its military activities to counter-balance the Russian militarization of the region, which has caught pace in the last five years.

The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to Greenland:
Greenland – autonomous Nordic nation that is a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland comprises the Island of Greenland and adjacent islands located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically and ethnically an Arctic island nation associated with the continent of North America, politically and historically Greenland is associated with Europe, specifically Iceland, Norway, and Denmark. In 1978, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland, making it an equal member of the Danish Realm. Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island which is not a continent in its own right.
