What is Quintessence? Well we know that something is up with the way the universe is expanding - there’s some kind of anti-gravitational effect that’s causing the expansion to accelerate. We don’t know what it is - just that it competes against the inward-pulling effect of gravity. And it’s winning - it looks like the universe will expand forever, at an ever-increasing rate. Quintessence for the Steep Potential | Center Manifold Theorem in Cosmology
✍️ About: In this video, we have presented a review of the Quintessence field minimally coupled with Dark matter in the context of the Dynamical System Analysis. For the Quintessence Field, we have considered the potential to be an exponential type having different steeper constants. The study gives both accelerating and non-accelerating critical points for which the Eigenvalues become non-hyperbolic.
🤯The non-hyperbolic term used for the case where any real part of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian Matrix is zero and the rest have either positive or negative values. In that case, the stability of the critical points can not be determined by using the standard Linearization Technique. Hence, I have discussed the "Center Manifold Theorem" to discuss stability. I have not given a greater dept...

Dark Energy and the Vacuum Catastrophe
In this video I would like to discuss one of the great unsolved problems in fundamental physics, the famous vacuum energy catastrophe (also known as the cosmological constant problem). What makes the problem so fascinating is that it weaves together two of the most successful theories of the 21st century, quantum field theory and general relativity, and demonstrates that something has gone catastrophically wrong in our attempt to understand the origin of our expanding universe.
The reason that we know something has gone horribly wrong is because our most successful theory of physics predicts that the universe should be doubling in size every millionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second! But this is clearly not happening. In fact, our best experimental observation...

Quintessence (physics)
In physics, quintessence is a hypothetical form of dark energy, more precisely a scalar field, postulated as an explanation of the observation of an accelerating rate of expansion of the universe, rather than due to a true cosmological constant. The first example of this scenario was proposed by Ratra and Peebles (1988).

The Dark Energy Mystery [4K]
In 1998, two teams of scientists measured the universe's rate of expansion, expecting to find the gravity of the Cosmic Web bringing the universe into a collapse. But instead, they found that the universe's expansion appears to be accelerating- having expanded more in the latter half of its life.
Both teams agreed upon the existence of a new type of energy field, known as Dark Energy, to drive this acceleration, and in doing so, they revived one of Einstein's long-rebuked ideas- the Cosmological Constant.

It’s one of the biggest mysteries in science. It makes up the majority of the universe. What is dark energy? What is dark energy made of? What is quintessence? Is Dark energy the cosmological constant? Does dark energy really exist?
Most scientists believed the expansion rate had to be slowing down over time, because of gravity pulling matter together. Some kind of measurement technique was needed to establish a standard luminosity. This is called a standard candle.
Two groups of astronomers (Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess, and Brian Schmidt) , came up with a way to measure the true distances and redshifts of very distant galaxies by trying to find recent Supernova explosions – called type 1A supernovae. These provide a standard candle because all type 1A Supernovae explode with about the same luminosity. And by measuring the red shift of the light, they could determine how much space had expanded, What they found was the universe was speeding up.
The energy fueling the accelerating expansion of the universe is called “dark energy.”
So what could be causing it?
First, this energy could a property of space itself - the cosmological constant. Lambda can be thought of as the energy density of the vacuum of space. It comes from a non-perfect cancellation of quantum fluctuations.
According to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, quantum fields from which all particles come from cannot sit still. Particles are coming in and out of existence causing fluctuations or pressure in the vacuum. But when you use the knows equations of quantum mechanics, the theoretical energy is almost 120 orders of magnitude higher than what is actually measured.
Another mechanism is called Quintessence. This is an energy field the pervades the entire universe. And it is repulsive. It would be a dynamical dark energy. It can change from place to place, and in time. Quintessence, if true, can be measured, because the differences in dark energy in different parts of space would be measurable.
There is a fine tuning problem though, which is called the coincidence scandal. The two densities are almost the same but in the past they were different. Why do we happen to live in a moment where the difference is only about 2.3?
If we believe the dark energy model explained by vacuum fluctuations, then there is something very special about now. And it is a huge coincidence. But if you believe quintessence is true, then this is not a coincidence.
The excitations of the quintessence field would manifest itself as a particle, probably a boson, but unlike every other boson, it would have negative energy. This would mean that lighter particles could decay into heavier particles by emitting quintessence particles with negative energy. This has never been seen. The models that fit the current data indicate that dark energy is not dynamical, but stays constant.
Could dark energy be photons or radiation? No because the energy density of radiation and photons changes as space expands. Dark energy however stays the same. Why is it that if the density doesn’t go down, it makes the universe accelerate?
Because what it means is that every cubic centimeter of space is expanding at a constant rate. So over very large distances, the cumulative effect is an acceleration of the universe.
#darkenergy
#quintessence
But if more energy is being created, doesn’t this violate energy conservation? No because the positive energy is perfectly balanced by an increase in negative gravitational energy of the universe.
The third possibility is that maybe we are wrong about dark energy, and maybe it doesn’t exist at all. Subir Sarkar, Theoretical physicist at the University of Oxford in the UK believes it does not exist because the data is not good. Dr. Sakar is in the minority on his views.
Part of the reason cosmologists readily accepted this data back in 1998 is because the Supernova data indicated that the amount of dark energy needed to make the universe accelerate is 70% of the critical density, the mystery of the missing 70% energy was solved.
The 1998 supernova data is not the only data that provides evidence of dark energy. the 2000 CMB experiments and the sloan digital sky survey in 2003 showed strong evidence that the matter density of the universe is about 30% of critical density.
Maybe the universe is not flat. Or Maybe there is something wrong with Einstein’s theory of gravity. This is possible.

SUMMARY:
Dark energy is different than dark matter. They are both labeled dark because we don’t know what they are. Dark matter does not absorb, reflect or emit any light. It is inferred to exist only because of its gravitational effect on galaxies and galaxy clusters. It's likely matter in the form of particles.
Dark energy is powering the accelerating expansion of the universe. It appears to be the most dominant energy form in our universe - 68% of the total.
Is it possible that dark energy could also be due to some kind of particle? And could dark energy be related to the Higgs boson and dark matter?
Einstein's equation for General Relativity required the addition of a term called the cosmological constant, Lambda to balance the expansion of the universe, so that it remained static. It was thought at the time that the universe had a specific size which did not change.
But after Edwin Hubble showed that most galaxies were moving away from us, the universe had to be expanding, Einstein realized his mistake and called it his “greatest blunder.” But in an astonishing turn of events due to the discovery of the accelerating universe, it turned out that inserting lambda back into Einstein’s equation, could account for the accelerating expansion of the universe.
But what does lambda actually mean? Physically it can be thought of as the energy of empty space, also known as the vacuum energy. Quantum mechanics shows that empty space contains energy. But its value is measured and is something we have to add in by hand.
It's important to note that this value is nowhere near the theoretical prediction of what the energy of the vacuum should be, based on the ground state energy of all the quantum fields, which is about 10^120 times larger. This has been called the worst prediction in the history of physics.
#darkenergy
#cosmological
Nevertheless, the cosmological constant is the simplest solution to dark energy and works well, as long as its value constant. But is it really constant? Some of the newest and most advanced observations seem to indicate that it might not be a constant. If true, this would lead to a solution with dynamical dark energy, or a theory where dark energy changes over time and space.
In this were the case, It could be evidence in favor of viewing dark energy as a field, not as a constant of nature. This is because fields can take on different values in space and time rather than staying constant. We could then imagine dark energy as a scalar field with some potential. This is similar to how the Higgs field works. The Higgs field is also a scalar field, and it has a non zero potential.
The dark energy field is more commonly known as a quintessence field. But anytime you have a fields, you have particles. This is because excess energy in a quantum field, or excitation in the field is what we observe as particles.
So this would point to a particle solution for dark energy. These particles must then interact with matter particles of the standard model to act as a kind of an anti-gravity force.
This called the “quintessence” model of dark energy. But if it exists, why didn’t we detect it? It's effect on matter could be so weak, that we do not have sensitive enough instruments to detect it, or it could also be that such a field does not exist.
Since quintessence fields give rise to particles, such a solution may show a connection to the dark matter particle. They could both be part of a deeper grand unified theory.
An interesting consequence of a dynamical dark energy is that the repulsion could get stronger and stronger as the universe expands. The universe would have a runaway acceleration, such that it would eventually rip everything apart including all matter and all spacetime itself.

We call this mysterious influence dark energy, but while we’ve talked a lot about how it behaves, we’ve never really explored what it is. So, what is dark energy, really?
One strong possibility is quintessence. Quintessence is a hypothetical form of dark energy, more precisely a scalar field. Watch the episode to learn more.

I have not given a greater depth regarding this technique, although I present a rough idea to understand this technique.

In fact, our best experimental observations suggest that the universe is in fact doubling in size every ten billion years. So what has gone wrong? And why? In order to answer this question we are going to need to take a journey through some of the most exciting ideas in modern physics, from the smallest quantum fluctuations of the vacuum, to the mysterious dark energy which is driving the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Cosmological Constant
https://wn.com/The_Dark_Energy_Mystery_4K
In 1998, two teams of scientists measured the universe's rate of expansion, expecting to find the gravity of the Cosmic Web bringing the universe into a collapse. But instead, they found that the universe's expansion appears to be accelerating- having expanded more in the latter half of its life.
Both teams agreed upon the existence of a new type of energy field, known as Dark Energy, to drive this acceleration, and in doing so, they revived one of Einstein's long-rebuked ideas- the Cosmological Constant.
