West Yorkshire County Council was abolished in 1986, and so its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now effectively unitary authorities. However, the metropolitan county, which covers an area of 2,029 square kilometres (783sqmi), continues to exist in law, and as a geographic frame of reference. Since 1 April 2014 West Yorkshire has been a combined authority area, with the local authorities pooling together some functions over transport and regeneration as the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Queensbury is a village in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Perched on a high vantage point above Clayton and Thornton and overlooking Bradford itself, Queensbury is one of the highest parishes in England, with fine views beyond the West Yorkshire conurbation to the hills of Brontë Country and the Yorkshire Dales to the north and north west. It has a population of 8,718.
Queensbury is most famous as being the home of Black Dyke Mills, and the Black Dyke Band.
History
Queensbury was originally known as Queenshead. That name was derived from a local pub (still existing) which was popular with travellers on the pack horse route from Halifax to Bradford.
The village was historically divided between the township of Clayton in the parish of Bradford, and the township of Northowram in the parish of Halifax, both in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish and urban district in 1894. In 1937 the civil parish was abolished, and the urban district was merged into the new Queensbury and Shelf Urban District. In 1974 the urban district was split, and Queensbury was transferred to the City of Bradford in the new county of West Yorkshire.
Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".
In the redistribution which took effect for the 1868 general election the two divisions were redistributed into three. Eastern West Riding of Yorkshire was created and the Northern and Southern divisions modified. Each of the three divisions returned two members.

Yorkshire has been on our list to explore more, ever since we visited York. So we have headed back for a Yorkshire travel series starting next week on the channel.
We will visit West Yorkshire, Oakworth and home to the Railway Children, take a train ride on the Keighley Worth Valley Railway and walk in the footsteps of the Railway Children.
Haworth was home to the famous Brontë Sisters, we immerse ourselves into their lives and the places they visited, finding inspiration for their world-famous novels. Even taking a hike up to Top Withens to see what Emily Brontë saw for inspiration to write Wuthering Heights.
Take a stroll along the canal at Hebdon Bridge and drive the Dales and visit Grassington a beautiful town that is the backdrop to Darrowby in the new series of All Creatures Great and Small.
Passing Thirsk, we pop in at the veterinary surgery where James Herriot was penned and it all started at James Herriot World.
Heatbeat was filmed in Groatlands in the North Yorkshire Moors so we could not resist paying a visit to the village and also seeing the station famous as Hogsmead Station in Harry Potter.
Castle Howard is next seen in Brideshead and Bridgeton more recently. This is a fantastic stately home with so much history that we wanted to share with you.
Finally, we arrive at the coast and Whitby where Bram Stoker found inspiration for Dracula with the views of Whitby Abbey. Ending our adventures in RobinHoods Bay a super cute fishing village with lots of surprises.
We hope you enjoy our travel adventures in Yorkshire.

There are some beautiful places to visit in Yorkshire. We drive the Yorkshire Dales to Grassington a beautiful Yorkshire town with a Yorkshire village vibe. Grassington is the fictional Yorkshire village of Darrowby in the latest reboot of All Creatures Great and Small.
We take a walk around this beautiful Yorkshire town and show you some of the filming locations as well as some history of Grassington. We take a short hike in the Yorkshire Dales at Linton Falls just 15 minutes away from Grassington square and drive through the Yorkshire Dales to other locations like the Ribblehead viaduct. It was a wonderful day out even if the weather was not always on our side. This will give you a small taste of the Yorkshire Dales and places to visit in Yorkshire.

For this video, we headed up north to investigate two of the worst and most dangerous towns in West Yorkshire.
The first on our list is Castleford, which is a town within the city of Wakefield.
Castleford has a crazy high crime rate of 174 times per 1,000 people, most of which happen in and around the town centre.
The other town in West Yorkshire with a high crime rate and severe poverty is Pontefract.
Pontefract has a lower crime rate than Castleford, but it’s still almost double the national average at 146 reported crimes per 1,000 population.
I hope you enjoyed this video and the tour of these areas, if you have any comments we'd love to hear from you - please drop us a comment below the video and we'll get back to you.
