Queen's Park is an administrative ward and a public park in Brighton, England. The population of the ward at the 2011 census was 15,904.
The area lies to the east of the centre of Brighton, north of Kemptown and south-east of Hanover. It is largely made up of Victorian terraced houses, with a smaller number of detached and semi-detached houses. There are also a number of low-rise blocks of modern flats.
In 1825, Thomas Attree, a property owner and developer in Brighton, acquired land north of Eastern Road—already known as Brighton Park—to build a residential park surrounded by detached villas, inspired by Regent's Park in London. He commissioned architect Charles Galloway to design it. Thomas renamed it after Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV. Queen Adelaide patronised the German Spa opened in 1825 by Dr F A A Struve of Dresden at the south end of the park, which remained in operation until 1886 when it continued as a mineral water plant until 1960. On the site now stands the Royal Spa Nursery school. Thomas' plan never fully materialised and the surrounding housing is mostly late Victorian with some late 20th century infill and replacement.
It participates in the Donald Gray Memorial Cup and their home stadium is Turnbull Thomson Park.
History
Queens Park Association Football Club was formed in 1957 by Alexander Stojkovich and in 1958 the team made its debut in the local Invercargill Second Grade competition. In 1960 the senior team was promoted to the premier Southland competition, the Donald Gray Memorial Cup.
When the Southern League was formed in 1968 Queens Park entered the First Division, finishing 9th. However at the end of the 1969 season they were relegated to the Southern League Second Division. 1972 saw Queens Park win the Southern League Division Two South & the Promotion/Relegation play-off to rejoin the Southern League Division One. The club played in this league until 1975, when some poor results saw them relegated to Southern League Division Two South. In 1977 they again won Division Two South, but failed to gain promotion this time around. For the 1980 season the Southern League was consolidated into a Northern & Southern Zone, with Queens Park joining the Southern Zone. The club continued to play in this league until it was again restructured in 1986. In 1987 they played in the reformed Southern League Division Two South, before withdrawing in 1988 to supply players to the Southland United amalgamation.
The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Queens-Shelburne.
Queens is a novel, written in 1984 by an author under the apparent pseudonym "Pickles," which describes gay life in London. The author was Stephen Pickles,
who at the time was working as an editor at Quartet Books, the publisher of the novel, with responsibility for its Encounters series.
Style
The novel is written in a variety of styles:third-person, omniscient narrator, overheard dialogue, and epistolary. In many ways the novel reads like journalism as it mentions numerous real-life bars, pubs, and cruising spots, as well as other less anecdotally gay parts of London. Heaven, the Coleherne, and The Bell on Pentonville Road are just three of the main gay locations mentioned in the novel. In some regards, due to the absurdist tone of the novel's overall narration it could be considered to be written in mockumentary style. The omniscient narrator appears to have a pessimistic and ultimately unamused opinion of the characters described which contributes greatly to the novel's comedic value.
