A pyrophoric substance (from Greek πυροφόρος, pyrophoros, "fire-bearing") ignites spontaneously in air at or below 55°C (130°F). Examples are iron sulfide and many reactive metals including uranium, when powdered or thinly sliced. Pyrophoric materials are often water-reactive as well and will ignite when they contact water or humid air. They can be handled safely in atmospheres of argon or (with a few exceptions) nitrogen. Most pyrophoric fires should be extinguished with a Class Dfire extinguisher for burning metals.
Uses
The creation of sparks from metals is based on the pyrophoricity of small metal particles, and pyrophoric alloys are made for this purpose. This has certain uses: the sparking mechanisms in lighters and various toys, using ferrocerium; starting fires without matches, using a firesteel; the flintlock mechanism in firearms; and spark-testing ferrous metals.
Handling
Small amounts of pyrophoric liquids are often supplied in a glass bottle with a PTFE (Teflon)-lined septum. Larger amounts are supplied in metal tanks similar to gas cylinders, designed so a needle can fit through the valve opening. A syringe, carefully dried and flushed of air with an inert gas, is used to extract the liquid from its container.
White Phosphorus, Chemiluminescence, Pyrophoricity and Reaction With Chlorine
Two of my last small blobs were spent on making this video.
So there you have it. A closeup of one of the scariest substances out there. Unrefined, therefore yellow-orange, but technically "white".
It fumes, it glows, it burst into flames, though the glow can't be appreciated in this video, so here's a more natural looking photo:

I've put another version at Wikipedia. Now there's finally a hi-res photo of WP glowing on the Web.
I won't say how I've made it. It is way too dangerous, and lots of stupid kids could get hurt. I don't want that, and I'm furious when I see dumb kids doing careless shit. You can actually DIE if you mess with this. Head of a needle can kill you, ...

Si-Pd(0) pyrophoricity vs Pd/C
Quick test comparing pyrophoricity of Si-Pd(0) hydrogenation catalyst to the classical Pd/C.
The round bottom flask was filled with Hydrogen gas with Methanol.
A little bit of Oxygen seeped in as the round bottom was uncapped.
Adding the Si-Pd(0) does not make any flame appear since the backbone is not flammable.
Adding the Pd/C afterwards creates a small explosion that is caused by the charcoal's flammable matrix.
This quick video shows a clear safety advantage for the Si-Pd(0)

I won't say how I've made it. It is way too dangerous, and lots of stupid kids could get hurt. I don't want that, and I'm furious when I see dumb kids doing careless shit. You can actually DIE if you mess with this. Head of a needle can kill you, and if it doesn't kill you, it wrecks your liver and bones.
I'm actually very afraid of WP. It's pretty, but the strained atoms in its P4 molecules just want to get hold of anything out there, and they do it very well.
It's best if it's kept as an element sample in a small vial of water.
Video contains 3 scenes: fuming and glowing, spontaneous combustion and reaction with chlorine.
The music is called "March from 'Funeral Music for Queen Mary'", written by famous composer Henry Purcell. The same music was used in the intro of Clockwork Orange, only on an analogue synthesizer (composer Wendy Carlos).
