Puget Sound/ˈpjuːdʒɪt/ is a sound along the northwestern coast of the U.S. state of Washington, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, and part of the Salish Sea. It is a complex estuarine system of interconnected marine waterways and basins, with one major and two minor connections to the open Pacific Ocean via the Strait of Juan de Fuca—Admiralty Inlet being the major connection and Deception Pass and Swinomish Channel being the minor. Flow through Deception Pass is approximately equal to 2% of the total tidal exchange between Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Puget Sound extends approximately 100 miles (160km) from Deception Pass in the north to Olympia, Washington in the south. Its average depth is 450 feet (140m) and its maximum depth, off Point Jefferson between Indianola and Kingston, is 930 feet (280m). The depth of the main basin, between the southern tip of Whidbey Island and Tacoma, Washington, is approximately 600 feet (180m).
The term "Puget Sound" is used not just for the body of water but also the Puget Sound region centered on the sound.
The corridor runs 156 miles (251km) from Vancouver, British Columbia south to Seattle, Washington, continuing 310 miles (500km) south via Portland, Oregon to Eugene, Oregon. Two daily trains travel to and from Vancouver, with Seattle or Portland as its starting or ending point; supplemental Thruway Motorcoach service connects travelers from Vancouver to trains heading south from Seattle, as well as providing additional service between Portland and Eugene, and connections to other Amtrak Thruway destinations in Washington and Oregon. The second daily service between Seattle and Vancouver, BC started on August 19, 2009.As of December 2011 four trains run daily between Seattle and Portland, with two of those providing service to Eugene.
Puget Sound salmon recovery is a collective effort of federal, state and local authorities and non-profit coalitions of universities, scientists, business and industry aimed at restoring Pacific salmon and anadromous forms of Pacific trout (Oncorhynchus) within the Puget Sound region. The Puget Sound lies within the native range of the Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus) and two sea-run forms of Pacific trout, the coastal rainbow trout (O. mykiss irideus) or steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout (O. clarki clarki). Populations of Oncorhynchus have seen significant declines since the middle of the 19th century due to over fishing, habitat loss, pollution and disease. Salmon species residing in or migrating through the Puget Sound to spawning streams include Chum (O. keta), Coho (O. kisutch), Chinook (O. tshawytscha), Sockeye (O. nerka), and Pink salmon (O. gorbuscha). Pacific salmon require freshwater rivers for spawning and most major tributaries of the Puget Sound have salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout spawning runs.
The hills and lakes of Seattle, Washington are a direct result of multiple Puget Lobe advances during the Ice Age. Beneath the drumlins, outwash, glacial troughs, and scattered glacial erratics lies the Seattle Fault, an active fault which has produced numerous magnitude 6 or higher earthquakes since the Ice Age.
Interstate 90 exposes much of this geology in its first few miles heading east from downtown. The freeway begins on old tidelands that were filled by early residents of Seattle. Hills composed of soft glacial deposits were moved and dumped into Elliot Bay to make new land for a growing city. Puget Sound Cruise Review - American Constellation Cruise Ship
This is the story of a 7-day cruise on Puget Sound (in the Pacific Northwest) with American Cruise Lines on their ship American Constellation.
In spite of mother nature throwing us some very challenging windy weather that prevented us from visiting two of the places on our original itinerary, it still ended up being an enjoyable and memorable cruise.
We did end up making it to Anacortes, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, and Poulsbo. The cruise began and ended in Seattle. Excursions took us to Victoria, Whidbey Island, and Port Gamble.

PNT Eabo Thru-Hike: Puget Sound
Here is the Puget Sound section of my 2023 Eabo PNT thru-hike from Port Towsend to Bellingham. This section is mostly road walks and dreaded my most hikers. I tried to embrace the easy miles and frequent opportunities for town food. With this mindset I was able to really enjoy this section.

I'm embarrassed to say that I made two factual errors in my voiceover of this video. In spite of what I say in the voiceover, this was NOT my 56th cruise overall... it was my 57th! Also, the ferry ride that I took to Victoria was NOT my first-ever ferry ride. After making the video, I remembered that I did actually ride a ferry in Mexico many years ago, between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen. Sorry about that, but the older I get, the more this kind of stuff is going to happen!
If you're interested in booking a cruise with American Cruise Lines, or any other cruise line, feel free to use the services of my Travel Agent, Caitlin Gallagher. Her fees are paid for by the cruise lines, so it doesn't cost you anything extra at all to have Caitlin do the work of arranging your cruise and being the contact person for the cruise line. If you've ever tried to call one of the cruise lines to book a cruise, or to make some kind of modification to your existing reservation, you'll appreciate why it's way better to have your travel agent deal with the cruise line instead of you doing it yourself! Email Caitlin at [email protected] or visit her web site at www.ambrentravel.com
