44—Prudentius, Poet Laureate of the Western Fathers | Way of the Fathers with Mike Aquilina
Prudentius is the Latin poet most praised from the ancient Church. Phenomenally creative, he invented new poetic forms and genres—and established artistic standards that would hold through the Middle Ages. Scholars as varied as C.S. Lewis and Robert Wilken call him “the first Christian poet,” the first great representative of a real Christian literature. Compared to Prudentius, all earlier Christian poets were dabblers. Upon his model depended such later luminaries as Bunyan, Milton, and Spenser.

What Is Evil & Where Did It Come From? The Christian explanation offered by 4th Century Prudentius
What Is Evil & Where Did It Come From? What is the origin of evil? While the great Greek philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus and others laid the issue on human weakness, early Christians like the 4th Century Prudentius had the tendency to put the blame squarely on the Devil or Satan for introducing evil into the world. A look into how Prudentius the fourth Century Christian theologian defends blaming the devil for all our problems and for the state of the world today using Genesis as well as the teachings of St. Paul.

When Lawrence came to martyrdom,
to bloody violence in the fray,
then Faith put on her arms and fought,
unsparing of her flowing blood.
He was the first of seven men
who at the alter stood to serve,
a deacon of the highest rank,
outstanding far beyond the rest.
He bravely fought with all his strength,
no sword was girded at his side,
yet he turned back the hostile blade
and struck against the wielding foe.
And so, Saint Lawrence, we desire
to celebrate your martyrdom;
for favors we request in prayer
are by your gracious gift obtained.
Since, chosen as a citizen
of that fair city most sublime,
you wear on high the civic crown
in heaven’s everlasting courts.
All honor to the Three in One,
to Father, Son, and Paraclete,
who grant us everlasting crowns
through your support and patronage. Amen.

If you're interested in philosophy tutorial sessions with me - especially on Augustine's thought and works - click here: https://reasonio.wordpress.com/tutorials/
You can find the copy of the text I am using for this sequence on Prudentius' Psychomachia here - https://web.archive.org/web/20020429135514/http://www.richmond.edu/~wstevens/grvaltexts/psychomachia.html
My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation
