But La Coruna also has a real standout attraction. The old town of Santiago de Compostela is one of the most quaint in the whole country, particularly when you look down on the red rooftops from above. In the town is the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella, one of the world's finest and the end point of the pilgrim's walk called Camino de Santiago.When planning a visit to La Coruña with a rented minibus or coach with driver check out

Taking the Road Less Travelled to Galicia, Spain (Exploring Vigo, Santiago de Compostela & A Coruña)
With Portugal under a fresh set of lockdown rules, I quickly made a beeline to the Spanish frontier and decided to take a spontaneous tour of Galicia Province, located just one hour north of Porto. Covering 300 km in 24 hours, my journey would take me to the artistic riverside community of Vigo, the stunning millennia-old Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, and to the Atlantic coast to check out the 1st Century lighthouse in A Coruña (the oldest extant lighthouse in the world!).
This is the greenest region of Spain, and also its least-visited Province. Though this side trip goes beyond my "Portugal, Azores, & Madeira" series, I was happy to take the quick detour to check out this incredible part of Spain.

== History and etymology ==
Iria Flavia was a Celtic settlement, capital the Capori, located in the confluence of rivers Sar and Ulla, and on the crossroads to Braga (Portugal) and Astorga (León). It became Iria Flavia under Titus Flavius Vespasianus, and it was the Episcopal See during the Middle Ages until Alfonso II of Asturias moved it to Compostela after the foundation of Santiago's sepulchre. In modern days, the town is the last stop on the Portuguese Way path of the Camino de Santiago.
When the name "Padrón" became more popular, "Iria Flavia" was consigned to a small hamlet (the current parish).
According to tradition, it was in Iria Flavia that Apostle Saint James first preached during his stay in Hispania. Soon after his death that his disciples Theodore and Athanasius brought his head and his body to Iria from Jerusalem in a stone boat. They moored the boat to a pedrón (Galician for big stone), hence the new toponym given to the place. The two disciples remained in Iria Flavia (now Padrón) to preach after burying the Apostle in Compostela, and the legendary pedrón can be seen today at the parish church of Santiago de Padrón.
Padrón soon became a popular passing place in the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and suffered several attacks in the 10th and 11th centuries by both Vikings and Normans. The invasion attempts decreased after the Torres del Oeste (West Towers) were built as protection in Catoira (Pontevedra) by Bishop Cresconio. This led to a great period of pr...

We are going in this occasion to the northwestern tip of Spain, we are in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, in the Province of A Coruña that gives its same name to its most populated city, welcome to A Coruña.
Day and night, there is always atmosphere here. This is a city to stroll and enjoy, with beaches right in the center and, presided over by the Tower of Hercules, a long Promenade that almost completely surrounds it.
The people of A Coruña have a reputation for living well, so follow their customs. Sit on a terrace in the Plaza de María Pita and discover its fascinating history. Or stroll through the Cantons and admire its famous glass galleries, in a modernist style. And if you want to go shopping this is the perfect place, especially if you want to dress up in fashion.
In addition, A Coruña has excellent museums such as the Fine Arts, the House of Sciences, the Domus or the Archaeological, in the Castillo de San Antón. And at sunset, nothing like the cozy and romantic Jardín de San Carlos or if you prefer animation, the Jardines de Méndez Núñez, right in the center.

A Coruña is a city and municipality of Galicia, Spain. It is the most populated city and the second most populated municipality in the autonomous community and seventeenth overall in the country. The city is the provincial capital of the province of the same name, having also served as political capital of the Kingdom of Galicia from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and as a regional administrative centre between 1833 and 1982, before being replaced by Santiago de Compostela.
