Prospect is a monthly British general interest magazine, specialising in politics, economics and current affairs. Topics include British, European, and US politics, social issues, art, literature, cinema, science, the media, history, philosophy, and psychology. It features a mixture of lengthy analytic articles, first-person reportage, one-page columns, and shorter, quirky items.
Notable features of the magazine include head-to-head debates between two writers with opposing views on a subject; roundtable discussions, in which a series of experts with varying views on a given topic meet for a discussion, an edited transcript of which is published in the magazine; and interviews with major political and cultural figures (recent examples include Orhan Pamuk, Paul Wolfowitz, and Hilary Mantel).
The magazine prizes independence over ideology and its articles and authors span the political spectrum. In recent years the magazine's founding editor, David Goodhart, has stirred controversy with a series of articles arguing that the increasing diversity of the United Kingdom may weaken the bonds of solidarity on which the welfare state depends. The debate fed into the broader discussions of "Britishness" that have become increasingly common in the public sphere.

The media is ‘sanewashing’ Trump’s gibberish | Rebecca Solnit on Media Confidential
According to the writer, historian and activist Rebecca Solnit, US media are failing to cover Donald Trump properly. “His incapacity to be coherent is pretty much hidden from the public, unless they’re listening directly or reading alternative media,” she says.
Solnit, whose essay Men Explain Things To Me inspired the word “mansplaining”, says she’s convinced that the US mainstream press—including the New York Times—are “sanewashing” the former president and the gibberish he has spouted during the election campaign.
Instead of showing how rambling and off-topic he is, they piece together fragments of his speeches to come up with a few crisp sentences.
Solnit joined Alan Rusbridger and Lionel Barber on the latest episode of the Media Confidential podcast.

Journalists quit in protest over 'baseless' Gaza stories | LBC
Prospect Magazine Editor Alan Rusbridger tells James O'Brien: "The Jewish Chronicle stands accused of running a number of articles by a man called Elon Perry, some of them extremely sensational, and which really suited the agenda of Bibi Netanyahu."
Investigations by Israeli journalists concluded that the story was "complete fantasy". Mr Rusbridger adds that the journalists quote the IDF as calling the stories "100% lies and totally baseless".

Is the UK general election all over even before the first vote is cast? The outcome of the election will inevitably have ramifications for the future of Conservative party—including raising questions about who will be its next leader. While Farage—who leads Reform—is clearly popular amongst certain areas of the media, is any news organisation likely to take the plunge and back him and laud him as a future prime minister, or is he destined to remain on the periphery?
Also this week: The Washington Post saga continues and Lionel and Alan discuss how long Jeff Bezos can allow the chaos to continue, and Lionel reacts to breaking news that the Telegraph has lost a record £245 million: a story that promises to grow over the coming weeks.
