He began studying piano at the age of five and studied under Boston piano teacher Margaret Chaloff, mother of jazz baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff, who taught him the "Russian style" of piano playing. At an early age he began improvising classical music. As a teenager he appeared in jazz clubs in the Boston area, gigging with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Vic Dickerson, Chet Baker, and Serge Chaloff. He graduated from Harvard and attended the Lenox School of Music where he was associated with such other future jazz masters as Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Gary McFarland, with a supportive faculty that included George Russell, Gunther Schuller, the Modern Jazz Quartet members, and Bill Evans. This allowed Kuhn to play, study, and create with some of the most forward-thinking innovators of jazz improvisation and composition, culminating with his joining trumpeter Kenny Dorham's group for an extended time and (briefly) John Coltrane's quartet at New York's Jazz Gallery club.
Steve Kuhn (born 1969) is an American financial executive with over 20 years of experience. He is Partner and Co-CIO at Pine River Capital Management LP. Kuhn has previously held positions at Cargill, Citadel LLC and Goldman Sachs.
Early Life and Education
Steve Kuhn matriculated at Harvard and studied game theory, statistics, and microeconomics, earning his bachelor's degree in economics with honors in 1991.
Career
After completing his degree in 1991, Steve Kuhn accepted a position with Cargill as a mortgage-backed securities trader. He later joined Citadel Investment Group as a trader of Japanese convertible bonds. After leaving Citadel, he transitioned to Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he became a vice president and portfolio manager.
In 2008, Steve Kuhn joined Pine River Capital Management as the head of Fixed Income Trading. Steve Kuhn received full partner status at Pine River in 2009. He continues to play a vital role in the firm's activities and was named co-CIO in 2013. Kuhn has found success in dealing subprime mortgage-backed securities.
Promises Kept is an album by American jazz pianist and composer Steve Kuhn with strings recorded in 2000 and released on the ECM label.
Reception
The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4½ stars stating "this is one of the finest recordings Kuhn has ever issued. Simply put, for all the decades spent adventuring on the boundaries where various traditions blur, the pianist and composer articulate direct emotion as the most effective communicator here, no matter what terrain is navigated in form. A breathtaking and intimate outing, this is a career-topping effort".
Violins - Krista Bennion Feeney, Elizabeth Lim-Dutton, Richard Sortomme, Karl Kawahara, Barry Finclair, Helen Kim, Robert Shaw, Carol Pool, Anca Nicolau
Promises Kept is an unreleased album by The Supremes, recorded during the latter half of 1971 with multiple producers. Ultimately, the project was shelved by Motown in favor of a set Floy Joy produced by entirely by Smokey Robinson the following year. The idea to the title came from Supreme Mary Wilson who said that "I'd heard the phrase and loved it. I wanted to use it on the next album."
Assigned the catalogue number M-746 and originally scheduled for a December 1971 release, no finished track listing is known to exist from the 19 songs recorded for the project. Five songs were released in 2002 on The '70s Anthology CD while another 13 appeared on the 2006 boxset This Is the Story: The '70s Albums, Vol. 1 – 1970–1973: The Jean Terrell Years.
