Pride and Glory is Zakk Wylde's first self-fronted album. It has more of a Southern rock sound than Zakk Wylde's other albums incorporating the likes of banjo, harmonica and mandolin.
Upon its release, their one and only album was seen as an almost complete departure from the music Zakk was known for with Ozzy, but the album's dominant Southern rock sound proved to remain a prevalent influence on Zakk's own music up to and including the debut Black Label Society album Sonic Brew. Zakk's songwriting skills come to the forefront on the album; there is a great deal of variety and the songs themselves are very dynamic, with a very loose jam-band feel to a number of them, namely "Shine On" and "Toe'n the Line."
Both "Losin' Your Mind" and "Horse Called War" were released as promotional singles with accompanying music videos, whilst "Troubled Wine" was also released as a promo single but without a video.
The album was reissued in 1999 on Spitfire Records with a bonus disc of rare and unreleased material.
Assistant Chief Francis Tierney (Jon Voight) is the head of a multigenerational police family, which includes his sons Francis, Jr. (Noah Emmerich), Ray (Edward Norton), and his son-in-law Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) all being police officers. When four of Francis Jr.'s officers are killed during a shootout turned bad, everything looks straight initially. However, Ray, who is assigned to the investigation, soon discovers something more sinister.
Plot
Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) leads the New York City Police Department to victory in police-league football. While everybody is celebrating, Francis "Franny'" Tierney Jr. (Noah Emmerich), Jimmy's brother-in-law and superior officer, answers his phone to find out that several men from their unit have been killed during a failed drug bust of a local gang leader, Angel Tezo.
Pride and Glory was a side project for Black Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde. This was Wylde's first self-fronted project, before releasing his first solo-album Book of Shadows in 1996. After that he formed Black Label Society in 1998, which remains his current band.
Coming together in 1991, during the No More Tours supposed-retirement tour for Ozzy Osbourne's No More Tears, the band was originally named Lynyrd Skynhead and included the former White Lion rhythm section of bassist James LoMenzo and drummer Greg D'Angelo alongside Wylde. Although credited solely as 'Zakk Wylde' solo tracks, this line-up actually released two individual recordings; a raucous Southern instrumental entitled "Farm Fiddlin'" on a compilation called The Guitars That Rule the World (1991) and a cover of the blues-standard "Baby Please Don't Go" on the L.A. Blues Authority Vol. 1 compilation (1992).
In early 1994 D'Angelo was replaced by Brian Tichy, this was at the same time that the band changed their name to Pride & Glory, and by May released their self-titled debut - and only - album, on Geffen Records. In June of that year, the band performed as a main stage act at the Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in England. In November 1994 LoMenzo left after their tour of Japan, 3 days before the beginning of their US Tour. Wylde managed to find a replacement for James in his long-time friend John 'J.D.' DeServio. The band played their last show on December 10, 1994 in Los Angeles in which Slash, guitarist of popular rock bands Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver played the Jimi Hendrix songs "Voodoo Child" and "Red House" with the band.
Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Edward Norton ("The Incredible Hulk," "American History X") and Colin Farrell ("Miami Vice," "Alexander") star in this crime thriller that blurs the line between morality and duty as it asks the question: What does it mean to be loyal? In New York City, a homicide detective is assigned to investigate the precinct run by his own brother, Francis (Noah Emmerich - "Little Children," "Cellular"). Meanwhile, the investigator's best friend is a cop in that precinct who may be corrupt as well. The truth opens up a Pandoras Box that threatens not only the family legacy but the entire precinct. Also starring Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Jon Voight ("Ali," "Transformers") and directed by Gavin OConnor ("Miracle," "Tumbleweeds"). MPAA Rating: R ...
