Can new prime minister Barnier finally end France's government deadlock? | DW News
Veteran French politican Michel Barnier has been nominated as France's new prime minister by President Emmanuel Macron.
The French presidency said Barnier has been tasked with forming "a unifying government in the service of the country." The decision follows almost two months of political deadlock after snap polls lost by Macron's centrist party.
Barnier's appointment comes despite his conservative Republicans party (LR) suffering significant loses in the June vote, and with the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance securing the most seats in parliament.
They did not, however, secure an outright majority. Further complicating matters, Macron's centrist coalition and a far-right group led by Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) make up the other two largest groups.

How France Plunged Into Political Uncertainty
French President Emmanuel Macron’s arguably reckless decision to call a legislative election after rival Marine Le Pen’s party made gains in European Union elections didn’t result in a far-right government. It did, however, lead to a messy hung parliament that could prove challenging for governing and financial markets. So why did Macron take the gamble and what happens now?

Macron had already refused to nominate a prime ministerial candidate put forward by the NFP. His decision to name Barnier has sparked new fury from the French left.
France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Melenchon slammed the choice, saying Macron was essentially creating a government that did not reflect the will of the people.

After months of deadlock, President Emmanuel Macron has appointed a new prime minister.
A member of The Republicans, Michel Barnier is 73 years old and was the European Commission's chief negotiator in talks with Britain over its departure from the EU.
But Macron's appointment of a right-wing politician has infuriated those on the left.
They say their leftist alliance won the most votes in the snap elections and they deserve a prime minister who reflects that result.
So will this latest controversy derail those efforts?
And how will Macron and Barnier navigate this new political landscape?
Presenter: James Bays
Guests
Jacques Reland, senior research fellow with the Global Policy Institute.
Rainbow Murray, Professor of Politics, Queen Mary University of London and a Specialist in French politics.
Diane de Vignemont, historian and political journalist.
