Imprisoned for 50 Years: Amnesty Calls for Leonard Peltier's Freedom as He Turns 80 Behind Bars
Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt
Supporters of Leonard Peltier are calling on President Biden to grant clemency to the Indigenous leader and activist, who marked his 80th birthday behind bars on Thursday after nearly a half-century in prison for a crime he says he did not commit. The ailing Peltier, who uses a walker and has serious health conditions, including diabetes, has always maintained his innocence over the 1975 killing of two FBI agents in a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation. His conviction was riddled with irregularities and prosecutorial misconduct, and he is considered to be the longest-serving political prisoner in the United States. For much of the last four years, Peltier has been held under near-total lockdown. For more on Peltier and the c...

Prosecutors and federal agents have admitted they manufactured evidence against him, hid proof of his innocence, presented false testimony obtained through torturous interrogation techniques, ignored court orders, and flat out lied to the jury. Biden sent troops to Russia and Ukraine’s neighbors yesterday – Romania, Poland, and Germany – potentially escalating the conflict with Russia. Germany has refused to send weapons to Ukraine, angering the United States.
The only Ukrainian voices in the mainstream U.S. media are those advocating confrontation. For the other perspective, The Freedom Side is joined by Dr. Yurii Sheliazhenko, executive secretary of the peace organization Ukrainian Pacifist Movement.
To hear a German progressive viewpoint on the conflict, and why Germans are against sending weapons to Ukraine, Reiner Braun, executive director of the International Peace Bureau & German activist, joins the show.
Biden announced early this morning that ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi died during an overnight U.S. military raid in Syria. At least 13 others died in the raid, including women and children.
Also on the show:
Discussing the case to free Leonard Peltier, who at 77 years old has Covid in prison, is Jean Roach, member of the Mnicoujou Lakota Nation and the co-director of the International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee. Roach is a survivor of the 1975 shoot out in Oglala, South Dakota, that resulted in Leonard Peltier’s imprisonment.
Amnesty International finally joined with other human rights groups and myriad people and organizations of conscience around the world calling Israel an apartheid state. Hear from Ali Abunimah, director of The Electronic Intifada & author of “The Battle for Justice In Palestine.”

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape — controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.

Native American activist Leonard Peltier has spent well over 45 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Prosecutors and federal agents have admitted they manufactured evidence against him, hid proof of his innocence, presented false testimony obtained through torturous interrogation techniques, ignored court orders, and flat out lied to the jury. People are commonly set free due to a single constitutional violation, but Peltier—innocent and faced with a staggering number of constitutional violations—has yet to receive equal justice. He never received a fair trial.
Today we are calling on all his supporters to stand up and let their voices be heard.
We hope that each of you will make a video showing your support, and share it with everyone you know, on all your social channels, and then send them to President Biden, in hopes he will grant Leonard Executive Clemency, so that Peltier can return to his family, and spend what little time he has left, as a free man.
He has numerous health issues, including heart problems, diabetes, severe dental issues, and a host of other concerns. We can allow him him to die in prison. We need to do everything we can, to see him finally freed, after nearly a half century of wrongful imprisonment.
In this video, you will hear from Ani DiFranco, who is a strong supporter of Leonard Peltier.
Other Peltier supporters, including Graham Nash, Tom Morello, Peter Coyote, John Desmore (of The Doors), Toad The Wet Sprocket, Ringo Starr, are just a small handful of the millions that believe Leonard is innocent and never received a fair trial!
Join the long list of supporters, today, and please share this video with everyone you know.
“The time is now. The place is here. Let's Free Leonard Peltier!"
