Mompou - Preludes (Complete)
Recorded Mompou composed his 12 Preludes between 1927 and 1960. Only the first 10 were published in his lifetime, divided into two books, the first book (1-4) published in 1930 and the second book (5-10) in 1952. Preludes 11 and 12 were published posthumously in 2004.
Prelude no. 11 was dedicated to Alicia de Larrocha on the occasion of her wedding in 1950. She premiered the piece but Mompou apparently wasn't quite satisfied with the composition because he subsequently introduced an ossia for a certain passage. When Larrocha queried him as to which of the two versions she should play, the composer joked, "one on weekends, the other on weekdays." I have chosen the ossia as it seems to represent the composer's final thought on the piece.
As of today, my recording of Prelude no.12 seems to ...

Federico Mompou: From 12 Preludes, No.7 (Palmier d'étoiles); and 8.
Federico Mompou (1893-1987) was a Catalan composer, best known for his piano works, which have enjoyed a considerable revival of interest in the last few years. Apart from 25 years spent in Paris, he lived for most of his life in Barcelona. The 12 preludes were written over some 30 years, the first four being published by Heugel, the next six by Salabert and the last two by Tritó - http://www.trito.es/details.php?ref=TR00188 - who have recently made available a lot of Mompou's scores. The title of No. 7 - 'palmier d'étoiles' - translates to English as 'palm tree of stars'. This is actually a type of firework - per Wikipedia 'A shell containing a relatively few large comet stars arranged in such a way as to burst with large arms or tendrils, producing a palm tree-like effect.'.

The falling stars are vividly depicted in the piece, which was written in 1930 [my apologies for somehow failing to sound the last semiquaver of the accompanying figure in the sixth bar of the 'piu mosso' section - but you would only notice that if you are following the score!]. No. 8 dates from 1943 - it is marked 'con lirica espressione' - which I do not take as an instruction to play it slowly!
