The facility, which opened in 1989, is a maximum security prison. In 1989 it had about 200 prisoners.
Shortly after the prison's opening, the majority of the non-death row prisoners at Potosi were serving long sentences, such as life imprisonment without parole, or sentences with a fifty year minimum before parole eligibility. A small number had shorter sentences.
Death row
In April 1989 the state transferred its 70 death row inmates from Jefferson City Correctional Center (JCCC, originally Missouri State Penitentiary) to Potosi. U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri approved some modifications to the consent decree before the inmates were moved to Potosi. Originally death row prisoners lived in a 92-bed, two wing facility at PCC. The death row inmates had their own special custody levels: minimum custody, medium custody, close custody, and administrative segregation. One wing housed the minimum custody death row inmates, with another wing housing the others. The classification system was intended to award privileges to death row prisoners exhibiting good behavior. After inmates filed legal challenges, administrators began to consider whether to integrate death row prisoners into the non-death row population, because the majority of non-death row the prisoners at PCC had very long sentences and had committed similar crimes to those committed by death row inmates.
A prison, correctional facility, penitentiary, gaol (Ireland, UK, Australia), or jail is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as a form of punishment. The most common use of prisons is within a criminal justice system. People charged with crimes may be imprisoned until they are brought to trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. Besides their use for punishing civil crimes, authoritarian regimes also frequently use prisons and jails as tools of political repression to punish what are deemed political crimes, often without trial or other legal due process; this use is illegal under most forms of international law governing fair administration of justice. In times of war, prisoners of war or detainees may be detained in military prisons or prisoner of war camps, and large groups of civilians might be imprisoned in internment camps.

Three Israeli hostages 'stable' after being freed, as Palestinian prisoners await release | BBC News
Three hostages - who had been held by Hamas in Gaza for 15 months - are back in Israeli territory.
The released women - Doron Steinbrecher, Emily Damari, and Romi Gonen - are being treated in a Tel Aviv hospital, and are in a stable condition.
Hamas has said for every hostage released, 30 Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli jails - it means 90 Palestinians are expected to be released soon.
The long-awaited ceasefire in Gaza came into force after a last-minute delay, but joy faded as Palestinians returned to their destroyed homes.

Emily Damari, 28, Romi Gonen, 24, and Doron Steinbrecher, 31, will be freed after 4pm local time (2pm GMT), according to a list provided by Hamas.
The office of Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, confirmed it had received the list, but did not confirm the names on it.
Israel is to release 1,904 Palestinian prisoners in the first phase.
The names of those to be freed on Sunday have yet to be made public but the full list includes more than 1,000 people detained in Gaza since the conflict began, most of whom have not been charged with crimes.
Another 737 are regarded as “security prisoners” including senior figures from the main Palestinian factions, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ brigades, the armed wing of Fatah, the ruling group in the West Bank.

ZMDE uses AI to build Minecrafts most secure prison and the villagers try to invade it!
