POST BOP JAZZ STYLES (Was 1959 the most important year?) Jazz History #52
This video introduces a series of episodes focusing on the various styles of jazz that emerged in the 1950s following the bebop era. By almost any account, this was one of the most impactful decades in jazz history, one which foretold a future in which it would become increasingly difficult to define jazz music. You'll also learn about Blue Note and Prestige, two independent record labels that played an outsize role in documenting the music of the post-bop era.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s. Title: Herbie Hancock Sidestepping Post-Bop Lines (LOTW #139)
Listen to Herbie do his thing on his fourth album as a leader, "Empyrean Isles." This tune "One Finger Snap" would later go on to become a jazz standard. After some more conventional bop playing, Herbie takes it outside in the last two measures of this lick with his signature "sidestepping" technique. This piece of the solo will leave you saying, "where did that come from!?"

Post-bop mixes elements of bebop, hard-bop, modal and free jazz without necessarily being any one of these style.
Post-bop was more or less invented by Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, so a lot of what I’m going to say here relates directly to this group.
The way that Post-bop responded to this attack by Free Jazz was with ambiguity – writing songs that were:
Harmonically ambiguous
Metrically and Rhythmically ambiguous
Formally ambiguous
So, in effect, Post-bop sits half way between Free Jazz and Tonal Jazz. If Free Jazz was ‘complete freedom’; Post-bop is ‘controlled freedom’. Post-bop breaks some musical rules but retains others, and still maintains much more structure and form than Free Jazz. Post-bop took on some elements and ideas from Free Jazz but retained others from Traditional Jazz
Post-bop straddles the grey area between Traditional Jazz and Free Jazz. And it’s worth noting that the line between Post-bop and Free Jazz is fuzzy – John Coltrane, for example, sat on both sides of the fence (it’s sometimes hard to classify his music – it’s often a mix of Modal Jazz, Free Jazz and Post-Bop).
