What is Diplomatic Recognition? Why does it matter?
We regularly hear of states "recognizing" one another--or not recognizing each other. But what exactly does this mean? What is diplomatic recognition and why is it important in global politics? In this Two Minute Explainer, I examine the importance of diplomatic recognition in the context of the current Russo-Ukrainian crisis.

Nauru switches diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China • FRANCE 24 English
The Pacific Island nation of Nauru said Monday that it is switching diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China, a move that reduces the dwindling number of Taiwan's diplomatic allies to 12 around the world. China claims self-governing Taiwan as its territory and has been peeling off the island's diplomatic allies, often with promises of development aid. It's a long-running competition between the two that has swung in China's favor in recent years.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Nauru's right decision to recognize the one-China principle and sever "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region was made independently as a sovereign country, refuting Taiwan local media reports, which claimed the Chinese mainland swooped in while the island country is in need of financial aid.
The Parliament of Nauru has approved and passed a motion on Tuesday in relation to the restoration of full diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

Sao Tome and Principe switches diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China
The Western African island country of Sao Tome and Principe announced today it was terminating diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establishing relations with China. Foreign Minister David Lee denied speculation that the move was linked with the Tsai administration''s refusal to acknowledge the 1992 consensus. But he did suggest the African country was motivated by financial promises from China. The flag of Sao Tome and Principe no longer appears in the lineup of the flags of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the lobby of the Foreign Ministry. Foreign Minister David Lee said money was behind the African country’s decision to cut ties. What does the increasing recognition of Palestinian statehood mean? | Inside Story
Until now, most western countries have maintained they will formally recognise Palestinian statehood only at the end of a peace process with Israel.
But after nearly seven months of Israel's devastating war on Gaza that's killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, Norway, Ireland and Spain say they won't wait any longer.
But the European Union is divided on the issue and larger powers like France say it's not the right time to recognise a Palestinian state.
And a U.S. veto still holds back Palestine's bid to gain full membership at the United Nations.
Will other European nations follow Norway, Ireland and Spain?
And what does this mean for Palestine's efforts to become a full member of the United Nations?

In a bid to move on from a bitter past, the U-S and Vietnam have signed letters of diplomatic recognition in Hanoi.
Warren Christopher is the first U-S Secretary of State to go there since the Vietnam War.
Now he says his government's priority is to deal with the problem of American GIs missing since the end of the war.
America is still getting over its bitter experiences in the Vietnam War. It's only now, twenty years after hostilities ended, that relations are beginning to normalise.
Warren Christopher's visit is the clearest indication of the improved relationship. He's in Vietnam to open the new U-S embassy in the capital city, Hanoi. He'll also hold trade talks, and discuss the issue of American M-I-As.
At Hanoi's Noi Bai airport, he was greeted by Vietnam's deputy Foreign Minister Le Mai.
His first task was to witness the hand over of the remains of four servicemen. Thousands remain missing, a constant reminder of America's defeat in south east Asia.
Those working to track down M-I-As say the normalisation of diplomatic relations will be a great boost.
SOUNDBITE:
I think it's important for every man in uniform to understand that his government isn't going to forget about him if he gets lost on the battlefield, their going to come back and look for him, so from that angle it's very important as well.
SUPER CAPTION: Lt Col David Fredrikson, US Army
Both sides hope the thaw in relations will help erase difficult memories.
SOUNDBITE:
As the first secretary of State to visit Vietnam in a quarter of a century, I'm here to lay a basis for a better future even as we continue to account for the past.
SUPER CAPTION: Warren Christopher, US Secretary of State
Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam joined Christopher to sign letters of diplomatic recognition as their two countries step closer together.
SOUNDBITE
This day has been made possible, not only by our two governments, but by the many Vietnamese and many Americans who have worked together to account for the missing United States service personnel.
SUPER CAPTION Warren Christopher, US Secretary of State
Vietnam is anxious to gain Most Favoured Nation trade status with the United States. Dealing with their mutual past will be a necessary and painful process before that will be acceptable to the American public

(4 Mar 2022) Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a speech on Friday on a non-official visit to Taiwan called for the US to give diplomatic recognition to the self-ruled island China claims as its own territory.

"It is my view that the United States government should immediately take necessary and long overdue steps to do the right and obvious thing that is to offer the Republic of China, Taiwan, America's diplomatic recognition as a free and sovereign country," Pompeo said.
"It's the reality. It's the fact... there's no need for Taiwan to declare independence because it's already an independent nation," he added.
Pompeo also commented on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"It's absolutely tragic," he said.
"I am praying for the people of Ukraine and we're all watching the people of Ukraine do amazing work to defend their own country in ways that I think many did not expect."
Pompeo was invited to speak to the local press by the Prospect Foundation, a private think tank based in Taiwan.
He is speculated to be among several Republicans who may seek the Republican party's presidential nomination in 2024.
Taiwan, formally known as the Republic of China (Taiwan), is where the former ruling government of mainland China, led by the Nationalist Party, fled to after losing a civil war with the Communist Party in 1949.

The Pacific Island nation of Nauru said Monday that it is switching diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China, a move that reduces the dwindling number of Taiwan's diplomatic allies to 12 around the world. A news release from the government of Nauru said that it was severing relations with Taiwan and seeking resumption of diplomatic relations with China. China claims self-governing Taiwan as its territory and has been peeling off the island's diplomatic allies, often with promises of development aid. It's a long-running competition between the two that has swung in China's favor in recent years. FRANCE 24's Yena Lee reports.

David LeeForeign MinisterGiven the size of Sao Tome and Principe’s financial shortfall, Taiwan had no way to fulfill its needs, and so it disregarded its nearly 20-year alliance with Taiwan, playing both sides of the strait off against one another in an attempt to get a better deal. Reports suggest Sao Tome and Principe had previously requested US$210 billion in aid from Taiwan. Though Foreign Minister Lee didn’t confirm that number, he did say that the country had earlier submitted some outlandish requests to Taiwan for financial support.David LeeForeign MinisterSao Tome and Principe definitely brought up some astronomical figures (in one of their requests), but under our current approach of “steadfast diplomacy,” we weren’t willing to play these money games. Today at noon, President Tsai convened a high-level national security meeting in response to the incident. An official statement released after the meeting said that Taiwan didn’t need to use money to compete with China in diplomacy, and said that the Foreign Ministry would conduct a detailed review of the country’s existing aid arrangements with its diplomatic allies.

Presenter: Cyril Vanier
Guests:
Yossi Beilin - Former Israeli Cabinet Minister, who initiated the Oslo Peace Process in 1992.
Julien Barnes-Dacey - Director of the Middle East and North Africa programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
Carne Ross - Former British Diplomat assigned to the United Nations, who resigned and founded the not-for-profit advisory group, Independent Diplomat.

Renowned romance novelist Chiung Yao has passed away at the age of 86. The author was found dead in her Tamsui residence on Tuesday afternoon, where she had taken her own life. Over the course of her decades-long career, the writer touched the lives of countless readers in the Chinese-speaking world, as well as dozens of actors that starred in the TV adaptations of her works. Fans and friends have taken to social media to share their memories with Chiung Yao and bid her farewell.
Chiung Yao
Novelist
This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.

Chiung Yao was the creator of the first dramas that Taiwan co-produced with China, “Four Loves” and “Three Flowers.” I have been very lucky to have worked with her and her husband, I’m thankful for the opportunities they gave me and I hope they are both happy together on the other side.
Many artists have mourned Chiung Yao’s death on social media, including Chinese actor Zhao Wei and Taiwanese actors Ruby Lin and Alec Su, all of whom who rose to fame after starring in “My Fair Princess.” Taiwanese actor Brigitte Lin says she will always remember her as a strong woman.
Chang Man-chuan
Author
The news of her passing came at 1:22 p.m. Her husband’s lucky number was 22, so I think it’s a sign of the loving connection they had.
Police responded to Chiung Yao’s suicide at 1:22 in the afternoon, a number that author Chang Man-chuan says is symbolic for its ties to Chiung Yao’s late husband Ping Hsin-tao. Through their lives, the husband-and-wife duo established Crown Culture Corporation, a publishing house that worked with renowned writers such as Eileen Chang, Sanmao and Amy Cheung. Many of their works were adapted to television, starring more than 100 famous actors. In addition, Chiung Yao owned three film and television companies, with a value of some NT$3 billion.
Chiung Yao’s body has been taken to the Second Funeral Parlor in Taipei, and is due to be incinerated on Friday. She decided to not hold a public farewell ceremony, making for a quiet and tranquil end for the literary icon.

Is Taiwan a Country or Part of China?
A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Shark Fishery Images from Taiwan, Province of China Underline Global Threat | Pew
New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

John Cena apologises for saying Taiwan is a country amid backlash
The Fast & Furious star and wrestler John Cena has apologised for calling Taiwan ‘a country’ in an interview he gave to a Taiwanese broadcaster this month.

‘I made a mistake. I love and respect Chinese people,’ Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. The controversy began when he told the Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin ‘Taiwan is the first country that can watch’ his latest film, Fast & Furious 9. Taiwan Province
Taiwan Province is one of the two administrative divisions of the Republic of China that are officially referred to as "provinces". The province covers approximately 69% of the actual-controlled territory of the ROC, with around 31% of the total population.
Geographically it covers the majority of the island of Taiwan as well as almost all of its surrounding islands, the largest of which are the Penghu archipelago, Green Island, Xiaoliuqiu Island and Orchid Island. Taiwan Province does not cover territories of the special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which are located geographically within the main island of Taiwan. It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mai...

Taiwan forces Qatar to remove Chinese province reference on FIFA World Cup identification card
Taiwan objected strongly to Qatar's move after it listed as a 'province of China' in an online application form ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup and forced it rectify the 'error'. This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

On February 27, Weibo’s top search rankings had over three million results for a familiar yet controversial name: Taiwan Province. A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over the island of Taiwan.
Member of public
I think this is just them getting excited over nothing. In the real world, it’s a simple matter that we don’t belong to them.
Member of public
Over there they have their own political reasons, so we can’t be too demanding because we don’t have any control over what they do.
Compared to flabbergasted Taiwanese, many Chinese internet users were so excited about the change that they posted comments online. One said the name should’ve been like this all along while another was happy to announce that the maps of AutoNavi Software and Baidu were updated to show Taiwan Province as well. But then some Chinese netizens took a self-mocking approach. One user pointed out that Apple is surely clever enough to have two different names for Taiwan: one within the Great Firewall and one outside of it. And another user reminded readers that in the virtual world he used to falsely claim that an entertainment star he had a crush on was his girlfriend. So, he believes Chinese are essentially lying to themselves.
Hong Kong citizen
At the end of the day China’s market is quite big, with many people having their investments there and people are doing business in China. So, sometimes you have no choice but to do what they want to do.
The data for Apple Maps is primarily provided by Dutch location technology company TomTom. But China’s government policy has put restrictions into place, which has resulted in Apple Maps having two data suppliers in the Chinese market: China’s own AutoNavi Software and Hong Kong’s MapKing. But in other countries Apple Maps still shows Taiwan, without the word “Province” alongside it. It seems that even in map software, there seems to be “one Taiwan with respective interpretations.”

A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over the island of Taiwan.

China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province.
