In Greek mythology, Polynices, sometimes spelled Polyneices, /ˌpɒlᵻˈnaɪsiːz/ (Greek: Πολυνείκης, transl.Polyneíkes, "manifold strife") was the son of Oedipus and Jocasta. His wife was Argea. His father, Oedipus, was discovered to have killed his father and married his mother, and was expelled from Thebes, leaving his sons Eteocles and Polynices to rule. Because of a curse put on them by their father Oedipus, the sons Polynices and Eteocles did not share the rule peacefully and died as a result by killing each other in a battle for the control of Thebes.
Oedipus's curse
In the Thebaid, the brothers were cursed by their father for their disrespect towards him on two occasions. The first of these occurred when they served him using the silver table of Cadmus and a golden cup, which he had forbidden. The brothers then sent him the haunch of a sacrificed animal, rather than the shoulder, which he deserved. Enraged, Oedipus prayed to Zeus that the brothers would die by each other's hand. However, in Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus desired to stay in Thebes but was expelled by Creon. His sons argued over the throne, but Eteocles gained the support of the Thebans and expelled Polynices, who went to Oedipus to ask for his blessing to retake the city, but instead was cursed to die by his brother's hand.
His son was Thersander.
Before Troy, there was Thebes.
When Oedipus died, he left his city to his sons... but they could not rule together. When Eteocles banished his brother Polynices from his kingdom and his throne, he set Polynices on a path for revenge.
This story follows Polynices from his exile from Thebes, to his arrival in Argos, where a mighty army was assembled with seven mighty champions.
They marched on Thebes, but was their mission a success?

Recently I had a project in English due, it was based upon the works of Sophocles [specifically Antigone]. We had to create a scene which was left out of Sophocles' Antigone. Me and my friends (Chris and Seth) decided to recreate the epic battle between the two brothers of Thebes, Polyneices and Eteocles. When we presented this video in class everyone thought it was extremely hilarious and well put together so I decided to share it with all of you lovely people in the hopes that you as well will get some enjoyment out of this.

Eteocles and Polynices: Fight to the Death

Fate, Family, and Oedipus Rex: Crash Course Literature 202
In which John Green teaches you about one of the least family-friendly family dramas in the history of family dramas, Oedipus Rex. Sophocles' most famous play sees its main character, who seems like he's got it all together, find out that he's killed his father, married his mother, had a bunch of incest children, and brought a plague down on his adopted hometown. He doesn't take this news well. John touches on all the classic Oedipus themes, including hamartia, fate, and the wrath of the gods, and even gets into some Freud, although Oedipus was notably not a sufferer of an Oedipus complex. In any case get ready for mystery, incest, bird entrails, and self-inflicted blindness. Very dramatic.
