Volkswagen sells controversial factory in China’s Xinjiang region | BBC News
Volkswagen is selling its controversial factory in China's Xinjiang following years of pressure to end its presence in the region.
China has been accused of carrying out human rights violations against the ethnic Uyghur population in the area and employing them in forced labour.

How India’s New Nuclear Submarine Base Challenges China’s Naval Plans | WSJ
Modi's India is building a new base for nuclear-armed submarines in the Bay of Bengal called INS Varsha in a bid to curb China’s naval footprint growing in India’s backyard. The Bay of Bengal is a critical shipping lane and some China experts believe the waterway could play a key role in any conflict over Taiwan or the South China Sea.
WSJ examined satellite images to see how INS Varsha has expanded and explores how this project is forming the backbone of New Delhi’s plans to keep Beijing’s ambitions in the region in check.

China's PLA in Turmoil? China's Defence Minister Is "Under Investigation" | Vantage with Palki Sharma
China’s Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun is under investigation for corruption, marking the third consecutive defence minister to face such charges. President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has already removed Dong’s predecessors, General Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, from their roles. These developments highlight deeper concerns about corruption in China’s military, raising doubts about its capability to achieve Xi’s goal of being ready to invade Taiwan by 2027. Dong’s refusal to meet US Secretary Lloyd Austin at a recent Laos defence meeting further underscores the strained US-China military ties. What does this mean for the PLA and Xi’s leader...

TSLA, Tariffs and Why China is Critical for NVDA's A.I. Dominance
With Elon Musk dubbed the "First Buddy" of the 2nd Trump Administration, John Engle looks at how that relationship may impact Tesla (TSLA) and the overall E.V. landscape. On the trading front, "animal spirits drive this stock in such a powerful way," adds Engle. For Nvidia (NVDA), he says supply chain concerns could escalate if China and U.S. trade relations breakdown.

What does this mean for the PLA and Xi’s leadership?

On the trading front, "animal spirits drive this stock in such a powerful way," adds Engle. For Nvidia (NVDA), he says supply chain concerns could escalate if China and U.S. trade relations breakdown.

Chinese missiles are dangerously flying over Taiwan, and China’s armed forces are conducting military exercises near the island. An exercise that could turn into a full-scale invasion by the army of communist China and result in a third world war for all mankind.
What was the history of China’s relations with Taiwan, and why did such tensions arise between the two countries?

The tension between China and Taiwan is at its highest. In China's eyes, Taiwan is a breakaway province that they need to reconquer. However, Taiwan sees itself as its own independent state from China. To prepare for a possible war, Taiwan is asking for help from his partners, including Australia.

Renowned romance novelist Chiung Yao has passed away at the age of 86. The author was found dead in her Tamsui residence on Tuesday afternoon, where she had taken her own life. Over the course of her decades-long career, the writer touched the lives of countless readers in the Chinese-speaking world, as well as dozens of actors that starred in the TV adaptations of her works. Fans and friends have taken to social media to share their memories with Chiung Yao and bid her farewell.
Chiung Yao
Novelist
This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.
Kao Chin Su-mei
Lawmaker (Independent)
Chiung Yao was the creator of the first dramas that Taiwan co-produced with China, “Four Loves” and “Three Flowers.” I have been very lucky to have worked with her and her husband, I’m thankful for the opportunities they gave me and I hope they are both happy together on the other side.
Many artists have mourned Chiung Yao’s death on social media, including Chinese actor Zhao Wei and Taiwanese actors Ruby Lin and Alec Su, all of whom who rose to fame after starring in “My Fair Princess.” Taiwanese actor Brigitte Lin says she will always remember her as a strong woman.
Chang Man-chuan
Author
The news of her passing came at 1:22 p.m. Her husband’s lucky number was 22, so I think it’s a sign of the loving connection they had.
Police responded to Chiung Yao’s suicide at 1:22 in the afternoon, a number that author Chang Man-chuan says is symbolic for its ties to Chiung Yao’s late husband Ping Hsin-tao. Through their lives, the husband-and-wife duo established Crown Culture Corporation, a publishing house that worked with renowned writers such as Eileen Chang, Sanmao and Amy Cheung. Many of their works were adapted to television, starring more than 100 famous actors. In addition, Chiung Yao owned three film and television companies, with a value of some NT$3 billion.
Chiung Yao’s body has been taken to the Second Funeral Parlor in Taipei, and is due to be incinerated on Friday. She decided to not hold a public farewell ceremony, making for a quiet and tranquil end for the literary icon.

🥒 *ABOUT BEFRS:*
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Republic Of China (1912–1949)
The Republic of China was a sovereign state based in mainland China between 1912 and 1949, prior to the relocation of its government to the island of Taiwan. A republic was formally established on 1 January 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution, which itself began with the Wuchang Uprising on 10 October 1911, successfully overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and ending over two thousand years of imperial rule in China.[3] From its founding until 1949 it was based on mainland China. Communists, Nationalists, and China's Revolutions: Crash Course World History #37
In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th-century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades and was interrupted by an alliance to...

"The Republic of China was a sovereign state in East Asia that occupied the territories of modern China, and for part of its history Mongolia and Taiwan. It was founded in 1912, after the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty, was overthrown in the Xinhai Revolution. The Republic's first president, Sun Yat-sen, served only briefly before handing over the position to Yuan Shikai, former leader of the Beiyang Army. His party, then led by Song Jiaoren, won the parliamentary election held in December 1912. Song was assassinated shortly after, and the Beiyang Army led by Yuan Shikai maintained full control of the government in Beijing. Between late 1915 and early 1916, Yuan tried to reinstate the monarchy, before abdicating after popular unrest. After Yuan's death in 1916, members of cliques in the former Beiyang Army claimed their autonomy and clashed with each other. During this period, the authority of the central government was weakened by a restoration of the Qing dynasty.
In 1925, Sun's Kuomintang established a rival government in the southern city of Guangzhou together with the fledgling Communist Party of China. The economy of the north, overtaxed to support warlord adventurism, collapsed in 1927–28. General Chiang Kai-shek, who became KMT leader after Sun's death, started his military Northern Expedition campaign in order to overthrow the government in Beijing. The central government was overthrown in 1928 and Chiang established a new nationalist government in Nanjing. In April 1927, he massacred the communists in Shanghai, which forced the communists into armed rebellion, marking the beginning of the Chinese Civil War.
There was industrialization and modernization, but also conflict between the Nationalist government in Nanjing, the communists, remnant warlords, and the Empire of Japan. Nation-building took a backseat to war with Japan when the Imperial Japanese Army launched an offensive against China in 1937 that turned into a full-scale invasion. After the unconditional surrender of Japan in 1945, fighting quickly resumed between the KMT and the Communists, with both sides receiving foreign assistance due to the ongoing friction between the Soviet Union and the United States. In 1947, the Constitution of the Republic of China replaced the Organic Law of 1928 as the country's fundamental law. In 1949, the Communists established the People's Republic of China, overthrowing the Nationalist government on the mainland, who retreated to Taiwan, and relocated its capital from Nanking to Taipei."

Central authority waxed and waned in response to warlordism (1915–28), Japanese invasion (1937–45), and a full-scale civil war (1927–49), with central authority strongest during the Nanjing Decade (1927–37), when most of China came under the control of the Kuomintang (KMT) under an authoritarian one-party military dictatorship.[4]
At the end of World War II in 1945, the Empire of Japan surrendered control of Taiwan and its island groups to the Allies, and Taiwan was placed under the Republic of China's administrative control. The communist takeover of mainland China in the Chinese Civil War in 1949 left the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) with control over only Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands. With the 1949 loss of mainland China in the civil war, the ROC government retreated to Taiwan and the KMT declared Taipei the provisional capital.[5] The Communist Party of China took over all of mainland China[6][7] and founded the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing.

SUMMARY
=======
The Republic of China, in the period up to 1949, was a sovereign state in East Asia that occupied the territories of modern China, and for part of its history Mongolia and Taiwan. During this period, the authority of the Beiyang government was weakened by a brief restoration of the Qing dynasty.
In 1921, Sun's Kuomintang (KMT) established a rival government in the southern city of Guangzhou together with the fledgling Communist Party of China (CPC). The economy of the north, overtaxed to support warlord adventurism, collapsed between 1927 and 1928. General Chiang Kai-shek, who became KMT leader after Sun's death, started his military Northern Expedition campaign in order to overthrow the government in Beijing. The central government was overthrown in 1928 and Chiang established a new nationalist government in Nanjing. In April 1927, he massacred communists in Shanghai, which forced the CPC into armed rebellion, marking the beginning of the Chinese Civil War.
There was industrialization and modernization, but also conflict between the Nationalist government in Nanjing, the CPC, remnant warlords, and the Empire of Japan. Nation-building took a backseat to war with Japan when the Imperial Japanese Army launched an offensive against China in 1937 that turned into a full-scale invasion. After the unconditional surrender of Japan in 1945, fighting quickly resumed between the KMT and the CPC, with both sides receiving foreign assistance due to the ongoing friction between the Soviet Union and the United States. In 1947, the Constitution of the Republic of China replaced the Organic Law of 1928 as the country's fundamental law. In 1949, the Chinese Communist Party established the People's Republic of China, overthrowing the Nationalist government on the Chinese mainland, which retreated to Taiwan, and relocated its capital from Nanjing to Taipei.

The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

A republic was formally established on 1 January 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution, which itself began with the Wuchang Uprising on 10 October 1911, successfully overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and ending over two thousand years of imperial rule in China. From its founding until 1949 it was based on mainland China. Central authority waxed and waned in response to warlordism (1915–28), Japanese invasion (1937–45), and a full-scale civil war (1927–49), with central authority strongest during the Nanjing Decade (1927–37), when most of China came under the control of the Kuomintang (KMT) under an authoritarian one-party military dictatorship.
With the 1949 loss of mainland China in the civil war, the ROC government retreated to Taiwan and the KMT declared Taipei the provisional capital. The Communist Party of China took over all of mainland China and founded the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing.
