These cliques were led by colorful warlords who even went to war with each other. The Zhili-, Anhui- and Fengtian Cliques are the most well known of this warlord era in Chinese history.

[Inaccurate] The Warlord Era: Every Other Day
Discord link! https://discord.gg/wky25hZ
The 1911-1937 Warlord Era in China.
Dates are year.month.day. Months are represented by numbers.
Every polity is given its own colour. All Chinese polities have the name and photograph of their current leader next to their identifier. They are grouped into factions. "Southern Warlords", "Northern Warlords", and "Neutral" are not coherent groups.
The video ends with the capture of Nanjing on 13 December 1937, since I felt that this date makes the final transition from a state of warlordism in China to a state of national resistance against Japan.

China's Warlord Era and Yuan's Monarchical Fiasco (1912-1928)
Consider Supporting HoH: https://www.patreon.com/HouseofHistory
On the 12th of February 1912 Puyi, China’s Last Emperor, abdicated. China now commenced into uncharted political territory: it became a republic. One day after Puyi’s abdication, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, provisional president of the Chinese republic, abdicated in favour of general Yuan Shikai, given that he’d respect the Chinese republic. Yuan Shikai had other plans however, among which eventually reinstating the monarchy. Not for nostalgic and sentimental reasons, though. No… he himself would be the emperor of China.

The Fall of Emperor Yuan Shih-kai [Eng Sub] 蔡锷北伐袁世凯
After the abdication of the last Qing emperor Puyi in 1912, China entered a turbulent era of warlords and political factionalism. Yuan Shikai who led the interim Peiyang government wanted to declare himself the emperor of "Empire of China". To reach his goal he assassinated political rivals such as founders of KMT (nationalist party) and signed secret deals with foreign agents to sell out Chinese national interests for support. To unseat Yuan from the throne, Cai E (or Tsai O), a former lieutenant of Yuan led a military insurgency against him (guided by Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the republic). Cai’s actions caused a chain-reaction as he inspired other military generals into following his example. This eventually forced Yuan Shikai to abandon his claim and led to Yuan's eventual death.

This video depicts one of the decisive victories during Cai’s uprising against Yuan.
